For others\u2014a new beginning, as a medical student\u2019s very first patient.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-left lg:pr-6 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-ml-24 xl:-ml-32 lg:mt-4 lg:mr-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-r-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\">&#8220;Every single day that we entered the lab, we acknowledged the sacrifice they gave in order for us to learn.&#8221;<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">- Ryan Bashour<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cI would like their families and friends to know, first and foremost, that their loved ones were treated with the utmost respect and dignity\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ryan Bashour is a first year physician assistant student at the Joan C. Every student will help thousands of people throughout their careers. They learned to do that with their first patient here at the medical school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearning something so complex like human anatomy from a PowerPoint or a textbook can only get you so far,\u201d said Bashour. \u201cTo truly understand the fragile, yet resilient nature of the human body, you need to see it firsthand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And\u2014Bashour says, those firsthand learning opportunities create a priceless Marshall Moment for them\u2014an educational experience like no other, laying the groundwork for their own important life-changing work that lies ahead.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-right lg:pl-8 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-mr-24 xl:-mr-32 lg:mt-4 lg:ml-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-l-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\">&#8220;The service is to honor the donors, but it is also for the families that are still here.&#8221;<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">-  Chris Dunmore<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cFor example, you\u2019re taught about cardiac enlargement during serious cardiac pathologies, like heart failure, but it\u2019s difficult to fathom the changes that occur. With the lab, you not only hold the enlarged heart within your hands, but you also see the downstream effects it can have on other areas within the body. It truly is eye-opening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students\u2019 reflections are my favorite part of the service,\u201d said Dunmore. \u201cIt lets the family see how meaningful their loved one\u2019s gift was to them. The service is to honor the donors, but it is also for the families that are still here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memorial service on Saturday, April 22, honored 56 donors to the human gift registry in 2022. It allows families to be at peace knowing they carried out their loved ones\u2019 final wishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A selfless gift to help other lives, long after death.<\/p>\n<p>Paying it forward with the priceless gift of hands-on learning.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They don\u2019t know each other, but they all share a common bond.
