{"id":813,"date":"2024-09-10T14:37:25","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T14:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/?p=813"},"modified":"2024-09-10T14:37:25","modified_gmt":"2024-09-10T14:37:25","slug":"the-path-to-giving-back-in-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/2024\/09\/10\/the-path-to-giving-back-in-education\/","title":{"rendered":"The path to giving back in education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>About 100 miles from Marshall\u2019s Huntington campus is Oak Hill, West Virginia, where Marshall freshman elementary education major Danielle Bailey was born and raised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI came from a low-income community where the teachers put in a lot of effort to make a safe, fun and creative environment for each of their students,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cJust like many of the teachers in my elementary school, I knew I wanted to make sure every child had the same space that I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bailey is one of 24 students selected for this year\u2019s Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars through the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-left lg:pr-6 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-ml-24 xl:-ml-32 lg:mt-4 lg:mr-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-r-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\"> &#8220;I was unsure if I was going to be able to come to Marshall, but receiving the scholarship gave me the financial stability to continue my education where my dreams can come true.&#8221; <\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">- Danielle Bailey<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cI was unsure if I was going to be able to come to Marshall, but receiving the scholarship gave me the financial stability to continue my education where my dreams can come true,\u201d Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p>During her junior year of high school, she joined a program called Grow Your Own Pathway to Teaching, offered through the West Virginia Department of Education.<\/p>\n<p>The Grow Your Own Pathway program allows high school students to start college early through dual-credit courses in their home county schools.<\/p>\n<p>And she\u2019s hit the ground running this semester, starting her first year academically a sophomore thanks to the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis journey is going to be long and some nights it may feel hard, but the impact I may have on my students will be worth all of the hardships,\u201d Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p>She said during her senior year in the program her counselor encouraged her to apply for the Underwood-Smith scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am super thankful for this scholarship and opportunity,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cI can&#8217;t wait to see what the future holds for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the fifth cohort of students who receive up to $10,000 per year for four years.<\/p>\n<p>Five other students with plans to attend Marshall University also received the scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>The Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars Program requires recipients to teach in a high-demand field in West Virginia for five years after graduation. High-demand fields include math, science, special education, and elementary education.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey\u2019s commitment to her hometown aligns perfectly with the program\u2019s goal to address the teacher shortage in West Virginia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-right lg:pl-8 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-mr-24 xl:-mr-32 lg:mt-4 lg:ml-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-l-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\"> &#8220;In the future, I see myself teaching in my home county. In Fayette County, we are struggling to find teachers. In Fayette County, we are struggling to find teachers. I want to encourage my community the same way they encouraged me,\u201d Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p>And her list of teachers to thank isn\u2019t short \u2014 but three stand out specifically.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy high school band director, Mr. Myers, gave me the advice to let your personality shine throughout you through your whole life. My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Setterl, taught me to be kind and to be the joy that everyone needs.
