{"id":836,"date":"2024-09-24T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-24T09:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/?p=836"},"modified":"2024-09-23T23:25:17","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T23:25:17","slug":"chasing-new-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/2024\/09\/24\/chasing-new-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Chasing new goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Abby Herring has had a lot of big moments during her time at Marshall University.<\/p>\n<p>In Track and Field, she broke multiple records and was a three-time Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Week. Named First Team All-Conference in Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, she qualified for the NCAA Championships East First Round, winning six events.<\/p>\n<p>Cross Country was much of the same story \u2014 she was a three-time Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Week, as well as being a four-time All-Conference runner and the first woman in Marshall history to run in the NCAA National Championships.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-841 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2024\/09\/HK1A7608-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Abby Herring sits on the steps of the playground at Marshall University's Early Education STEAM Center\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2024\/09\/HK1A7608-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2024\/09\/HK1A7608-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2024\/09\/HK1A7608-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/files\/2024\/09\/HK1A7608.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This summer, she was named a finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Even with all these successes, ask Herring about her favorite Marshall moments, and she\u2019ll call to mind a situation she wasn\u2019t even there to witness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was in Birmingham, Alabama, running at our Sun Belt Indoor Championship, my mentor teacher, Stephanie Spencer, somehow found an ESPN+ login and broadcasted my race to our second-grade class where I was doing my student teaching,\u201d Herring said. \u201cShe sent me a video of all the children chanting, \u2018Go Ms. Herring!\u2019 as they watched me compete. It is moments like those where I was so proud and thankful to be a part of this community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herring\u2019s days of running for Marshall University are over, but her days inspiring other members of the Marshall family are still going. After earning an undergraduate degree in elementary education, she is now working on a master\u2019s degree in literacy education and a certificate in early childhood education, with plans to graduate in the spring of 2025. She works as a graduate assistant at Marshall\u2019s Early Education STEAM Center, assisting in the preschool classroom on campus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-left lg:pr-6 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-ml-24 xl:-ml-32 lg:mt-4 lg:mr-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-r-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\"> &#8220;I chose this career path because of the positive impact that teachers had on my life. Teaching is not always easy, but it has been the most rewarding experience that I\u2019ve had the privilege to be a part of.&#8221;<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">- Abby Herring<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Along with running, working with children is something in which Herring strives to give her best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose this career path because of the positive impact that teachers had on my life,\u201d said Herring, a Parkersburg South High School graduate. \u201cTeaching is not always easy, but it has been the most rewarding experience that I\u2019ve had the privilege to be a part of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love that every day is something new. I have never had to worry about getting bored with my job. \u2026 Students come to school with new ideas, personalities and creativities each day. I know it is super clich\u00e9, but making a difference in a child\u2019s life is something that is so rewarding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also has worked with children through activities such as Marshall&#8217;s Sweetheart Clinic, which encourages young girls in sports, and Country Roads Running Camp, mentoring high school runners. She also worked for Marshall\u2019s HELP Center in 2023, serving as a learning specialist who tutored local students with learning disabilities and ADHD.<\/p>\n<p>While doing her student-teaching at Southside Elementary School in 2022-2023, she worked closely with members of the Huntington community, including collaborating on a Black History Month project in which teachers reached out to prominent figures in the Huntington community and set up interviews for the students to lead with those individuals.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-right lg:pl-8 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-mr-24 xl:-mr-32 lg:mt-4 lg:ml-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-l-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\"> &#8220;The community involvement that I have taken part in here in Huntington has allowed me to grow as an athlete, student, teacher, and person.&#8221;<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">- Abby Herring<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cThese experiences have allowed me to become more involved in the community here in Huntington and West Virginia and give back to the same people that have supported me along my journey,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community involvement that I have taken part in here in Huntington has allowed me to grow as an athlete, student, teacher, and person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After graduating in the spring, she hopes to get a job teaching in an elementary school, with plans to take an exam to be certified as a literacy specialist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy choice to attend Marshall was the best decision I could have made,\u201d Herring said. \u201cI have formed lifelong friendships, excelled athletically and been given a wide range of academic opportunities for a quality education. Academically, the university offers smaller class sizes, advanced technologies, tutoring services, experienced professors and other various services that contribute to students\u2019 accomplishments.<\/p>\n<div class=\"block border-t-2 border-b-2 py-6 mt-6 lg:border-t-0 lg:border-b-0 mb-8 lg:float-left lg:pr-6 lg:py-6 lg:w-1\/3 lg:-ml-24 xl:-ml-32 lg:mt-4 lg:mr-8 lg:mb-4 lg:border-r-4 border-green \">\n\t<span class=\"text-gray-700 font-semibold text-lg leading-5 bg-repeat-x bg-size-[100%_6px] bg-position-[0_90%] bg-linear-to-r from-green\/10 to-green\/10\"> &#8220;Although Marshall is a Division I school, I never felt like I was just a \u2018number\u2019 to the university. I had personal relationships with my professors, coaches and administrators. It was because of these relationships that I was able to succeed both academically and athletically.&#8221;<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t<span class=\"block text-right w-full mt-4 uppercase font-medium\">- Abby Herring<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough Marshall is a Division I school, I never felt like I was just a \u2018number\u2019 to the university. I had personal relationships with my professors, coaches and administrators. It was because of these relationships that I was able to succeed both academically and athletically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Herring said that several of the skills that she learned through running, such as resilience and how hard work pays off, have translated to other areas of life \u2014 like working with children, school and even relationships. And although she no longer competes for Marshall, Herring is still running just as much, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShortly after ending my track season, I ran my first marathon in Charlevoix, Michigan, and plan to run the Columbus marathon,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>There are many people to thank for their support along her journey, but she highlighted<br \/>\nCoach Caleb Bowen, who \u201ctook a chance and invested in me,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is an advocate for his athletes as runners and people and truly cares for everyone around him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She thanked the Marshall community as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past five years, they have shown me nothing but love and support throughout my running\/ academic career,\u201d she said. \u201cMy professors, mentor teacher, administrators, coaches, and teammates are the reason I was able to make Huntington my home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of all, she wanted to thank her parents, who have \u201ctraveled all over the country to watch me run and have been my support system since day one,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are truly my number one fans, and I cannot thank them enough for all they have done for me.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abby Herring has had a lot of big moments during her time at Marshall University.
