When Jimmy John Jacob, a freshman from Hilliard, Ohio, first visited Marshall University, he fell in love with the campus. However, like many out-of-state students, tuition costs were a significant factor in his college decision. Thanks to Marshall\u2019s expanded Metro Tuition<\/a> rate, Jimmy John and many others from the Columbus area can now attend the university at a significantly reduced cost, making their academic dreams more accessible.<\/p>\n

\"Marshall<\/p>\n

\u201cI came down here on my visit and they give us a pamphlet with all the different rates,\u201d Jimmy John said. \u201cMy dad was looking at it and he’s like, \u2018What do we got to do to get Metro?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThey already loved Marshall, and this just made it even better.<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t- Jimmy John Jacob<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n

Although their county didn\u2019t qualify for the reduced tuition rate at the time, Jimmy John and his family ultimately decided Marshall was the right fit. Jimmy John chose to enroll at Marshall and is currently in his second semester.<\/p>\n

The Metro Tuition rate, which was expanded beyond the bordering counties of Ohio and Kentucky, now includes areas like Columbus, Ohio, and Lexington, Kentucky. This expansion goes into effect for fall 2025 and has already made a major impact, allowing more students from these regions to pay reduced tuition rates instead of the traditionally higher out-of-state costs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you had told me when I first visited that I would be getting this tuition rate and graduating debt-free, I would have thought you were crazy,\u201d Jimmy John said.<\/p>\n

\"Marshall<\/p>\n

For Jimmy John\u2019s family, the news was almost too good to believe. \u201cWhen I called my parents to tell them Columbus was included, they didn\u2019t believe me,\u201d he said. \u201cMy mom was over the moon. They already loved Marshall, and this just made it even better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond the financial relief, Jimmy John\u2019s experience at Marshall has been transformative. As a broadcast journalism major, he\u2019s been able to get hands-on experience in his field during his first year, an opportunity he says isn\u2019t common at many larger universities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt other schools, you might not get to touch anything related to your major until your junior or senior year. Here, they don\u2019t care what grade you are\u2014they just want you to get involved and start learning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tI can go home for a long weekend if I need to, but I also have the space to truly experience college life.<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t- Jimmy John Jacob<\/span>\n\t<\/div>\n\n

And involved he has been. From joining the Student Government Association to working with WMUL, the student radio station, Jimmy John has embraced the tight-knit community that Marshall offers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one big, small town,\u201d he said. \u201cThe people here are amazing. It\u2019s not just a college\u2014it\u2019s a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Living on campus has also been a highlight of Jimmy John\u2019s college experience. Though he\u2019s just two and a half hours from home, the distance has allowed him to grow independently while still being close enough to visit when needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the perfect distance,\u201d he said. \u201cI can go home for a long weekend if I need to, but I also have the space to truly experience college life.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the expanded Metro Tuition rate, Jimmy John is confident more students from his hometown will consider Marshall as a viable, affordable option.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had people from my high school ask me about it, and I tell them they just need to come visit. It\u2019s shocking how high-quality the education is for the cost\u2014you won\u2019t find this kind of value anywhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Marshall continues to grow and expand its reach, students like Jimmy John are proof that initiatives like the Metro Tuition<\/a> rate can change lives.
