Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Clinic

What can I expect on my first visit to Marshall University’s Multidisciplinary ALS Clinic?

During your first visit, you will receive a comprehensive assessment by multiple health professionals: physician, physical therapist, speech therapist, dietitian, respiratory therapist, occupational therapist, and social worker. Each professional will offer recommendations and answer any questions related to their field.

Due to the number of health professionals, please plan to be at the clinic for approximately four hours. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to speak with an ALS Association representative if you desire.

After the clinic, your team of health professionals will meet to collaborate about your case. A list of recommendations will be mailed to you when the clinic concludes.

What is the clinic?

Marshall University’s ALS Clinic typically offered the third Friday of every month on Marshall University’s Huntington campus in Smith Hall, room 143. Schedules may be modified due to holidays and provider scheduling conflicts.

What can I expect during my follow up visits?

After your initial assessment, the ALS Clinic offers follow-up visits. Follow up visits allow you the opportunity to report any changes in physical, communication, or health status. It also allows health professionals to monitor changes and be proactive in the treatment of the disease. You do not need to see every professional at every follow-up visit. Your next scheduled ALS clinic date will be mailed to you after the clinic concludes.

What are the costs associated with the ALS clinic?

The physician and speech therapist will bill your insurance for services provided. Please check with your insurance to determine the co-pay or cost associated with the services. The dietitian will offer services on a private-pay option ($75/initial assessment and $30/Follow up visit). You will receive a bill in the mail for the service. All additional services will be offered at NO cost.

What are the costs associated with the ALS Clinic?

If you are unable to afford the dietitian services or physician/speech therapist co-pays, please speak with the ALS Association representative. There is funding available to help offset these costs.
