Communication Devices

What can I expect from the AAC Evaluation Clinic?

During your first visit, you’ll receive an assessment by a speech-language pathologist. A professional representative from a speech-generating device company and/or a physical therapist may also be present. Each professional will offer recommendations to answer any questions related to their field.

When and where can I receive services?

Referral from a physician is required, though scheduling is flexible. Evaluations typically occur at the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center located on the first floor of Smith Hall on Marshall University’s Huntington campus. If you have ALS and are unable to leave home due to physical impairments, please call the office to inquire about an assessment through telehealth.

What can I expect following the evaluation?

After your initial assessment, the AAC clinic will complete the necessary documentation and request funding for a speech-generating device (SGD), if warranted. The clinic will also provide recommendations for future speech-language pathology services as needed.

What costs are associated with ASD Evaluation Clinic?

The speech therapist will bill your insurance for the service provided. If a speech-generating device is recommended, there may be additional costs. Please check with your insurance to determine a co-pay or cost associated with the evaluation of a speech-generated device.
