Children and teens also need to understand how to start and maintain conversations, interpret social cues, consider another person&#8217;s perspective, navigate disagreements, develop friendships, and adjust their communication across different situations.<\/p>\n<p>The Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center offers Social Language Groups for children and adolescents who experience challenges with social communication. Our groups provide a supportive environment where participants can learn, practice, and apply communication strategies while interacting with peers.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than practicing social communication skills only with an adult clinician, group therapy provides opportunities to use these skills in more natural interactions with other children and teens. Our goal is to help participants develop communication skills that support meaningful relationships and successful participation at home, at school, and in the community.<\/p>\n<h2>Who can Benefit from Social Language Groups<\/h2>\n<p>Social Language Groups may benefit children and teens who have difficulty using language effectively during social interactions.<\/p>\n<p>Participants may include children and adolescents with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Social communication difficulties<\/li>\n<li>Autism spectrum disorder<\/li>\n<li>Social (pragmatic) communication disorder<\/li>\n<li>Attention or executive functioning difficulties that affect social interaction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A diagnosis is not necessarily what determines whether a child is appropriate for a group. Placement is based on each child&#8217;s individual communication needs and whether the group setting is an appropriate match.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Group Therapy?<\/h2>\n<p>Social communication happens with other people. Successful group therapy depends on placing children and teens with peers who have compatible communication needs, interaction styles, and goals.<\/p>\n<p>Our clinicians consider several factors when identifying an appropriate group, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communication strengths and needs<\/li>\n<li>Individual treatment goals<\/li>\n<li>Age and developmental level<\/li>\n<li>Interests<\/li>\n<li>Compatibility with other group members<\/li>\n<li>Ability to benefit from a group environment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For most children and teens, we offer a trial group session before making a final placement recommendation.<\/strong> This gives the participant an opportunity to experience the group and allows our clinicians to observe interactions with peers, determine whether the group is a good fit, and identify ways we can best support successful participation.<\/p>\n<p>Following the trial session, our clinicians will discuss recommendations with the family. In some cases, we may recommend a different group, individual therapy, or another service that better meets the child&#8217;s current needs.<\/p>\n<h2>Group Availability and Waitlist<\/h2>\n<p>Because groups are intentionally created around the needs and compatibility of participants, enrollment is limited.
