A Therapy Dog Team<\/strong> is comprised of a Therapy Dog<\/strong> and Therapy Dog Handler<\/strong>.\u00a0 A Therapy Dog<\/strong>\u00a0has been specifically trained to provide emotional assistance, affection, and comfort to people in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and other institutions.\u00a0 A Therapy Dog Handler <\/strong>is an individual who is responsible for and in control of a therapy dog.\u00a0 All Therapy Dog Teams<\/strong> participating in MU PAWS<\/strong> have been certified through Alliance of Therapy Dogs, Therapy Dogs International, or another equivalent organization.\u00a0 All MU PAWS<\/strong> teams have passed tests, completed observations, and maintain current status with a therapy dog certification organization.<\/p>\nBenefits of Therapy Dog Programs<\/h2>\n\n- Aid students who struggle with homesickness and social anxiety.<\/li>\n
- Provide canine companionship to those who cannot have an animal while at college.<\/li>\n
- Aid students with LD, ADHD, and co-morbid issues like depression, anxiety, etc.<\/li>\n
- Contribute to a general sense of belonging and positive environment on campus.<\/li>\n
- Ease stress during midterms and final weeks.<\/li>\n
- Help to de-stigmatize mental health issues and raise awareness for campus based mental heath resources.<\/li>\n
- Assist with on-campus counseling services.<\/li>\n
- Promote a positive learning environment.<\/li>\n
- Provide support to veteran students and staff with PTSD.<\/li>\n
- Help with pain recovery\/management.<\/li>\n
- Provide comfort to those who are mourning or experiencing crisis, death, and\/or sickness.<\/li>\n
- Provide a conversation opener for shy students.<\/li>\n
- Petting a dog reduces blood pressure and contributes to lower levels of stress hormones and an increase in oxytocin.<\/li>\n

What Is MU PAWS? MU PAWS is Marshall University’s campus Therapy Dog Program.
