He got the idea for his entry after a real-life stumbling block.<\/p>\n<p>While working on a research project about autonomous vehicles at the University of Arizona, Watson was collaborating with a partner who is a Spanish-speaking Puerto Rican native. While his partner knew a little bit of English, the two often were forced to communicate by drawing pictures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Undergraduate-Research-Day-2014-103seqn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10102 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Undergraduate-Research-Day-2014-103seqn-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Dylan Watson wearing Google Glass\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Undergraduate-Research-Day-2014-103seqn-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Undergraduate-Research-Day-2014-103seqn-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Undergraduate-Research-Day-2014-103seqn.jpg 1422w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>Watson said, \u201cI thought to myself: there has to be a better way of doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This barrier motivated Watson to create a Google Glass application (app) called, \u201cWearable Integrated Translator to Break Down communication Barriers\u201d\u2014or WIT.<\/p>\n<p>Using the WIT app, users create a \u201cchat room\u201d that other Glass users can join.<\/p>\n<p>A user can instruct the device to start listening for translation using the phrase \u201cOk Glass, start translating.\u201d Glass immediately sends the words that the user is saying to Watson\u2019s application server, where it identifies the message as well as the languages that the other members of the chat room speak. Then, the user\u2019s original message is sent to the other chat room members\u2019 devices where the message is displayed on their screen or played in their native language using the Glass ear piece.
