{"id":9775,"date":"2014-02-27T15:38:13","date_gmt":"2014-02-27T20:38:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/?p=9775"},"modified":"2026-02-05T10:55:02","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T15:55:02","slug":"marshall-university-to-partner-in-clean-water-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/marshall-university-to-partner-in-clean-water-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall University to partner in clean water initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><strong>Thursday, Feb. 27, \u00a02014<\/strong><\/h5>\n[social_share\/]\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>HUNTINGTON, W.Va.\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013\u00a0Marshall University officials have announced\u00a0the university\u00a0will be\u00a0partnering with\u00a0the Charleston Area Alliance and others to create a center of innovation for water cleanliness and sustainability at the West Virginia Regional Technology Park in South Charleston.<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the\u00a0new West Virginia Water Sustainability Institute\u00a0will be to develop and commercialize innovative technologies to maintain, improve and protect water supplies throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. John Maher, Marshall vice president for research, said the university is pleased to join the effort.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Marshall-Water-Quality-Research.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9778 alignright\" style=\"border: 1px solid grey; margin: 2px;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Water-one_pager-231x300.jpg\" alt=\"Water Research Fact Sheet\" width=\"167\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Water-one_pager-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Water-one_pager-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/murc\/files\/Water-one_pager.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ultimate goal of the West Virginia Water Sustainability Institute is to harness the research assets of all the partners to make our water supply cleaner and safer, and to help industry innovate and create technologies that will support high-value jobs and investments right here in West Virginia,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have an active water research program already in place at Marshall with scientists who are studying how to detect contaminants in water, predict their toxicity and understand how to remove them from the environment. This new center will give us an opportunity to directly\u00a0use that work to\u00a0help protect\u00a0our community and create a better regional economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maher said\u00a0formation of the\u00a0center\u00a0is still in its early stages but that the institute will support the following\u00a0types of research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Commercializing technologies that reduce hazards to freshwater sources;<\/li>\n<li>Commercializing technologies for rapid identification of water contamination;<\/li>\n<li>Developing custom solutions to water quality and quantity issues;<\/li>\n<li>Testing and evaluating technologies that maintain the integrity of the entire water distribution system;<\/li>\n<li>Providing independent assessments and reviews of potential hazards, technologies, contingency plans and related water quality issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to Marshall and the Charleston Area Alliance, the partners in the initiative include the Charleston Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Chemical Alliance Zone, the West Virginia Regional Technology Park, West Virginia State University and the Mid-Atlantic Technology, Research &amp; Innovation Center (MATRIC).
