Marshall University\u00a0General Application<\/h2>\n

Marshall University Jazz Studies Audition Requirements<\/h2>\n

If you have any questions regarding the required material for the jazz audition, (piece specifics, finding copies of the required music, etc) please contact Prof. Jeff Wolfe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Undergraduate<\/span><\/h2>\n

Jazz Instrumentalists (non-rhythm section & vibraphone)<\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Perform 12 Major scales, two octaves, up and down.<\/li>\n
  • Perform one blues in a key selected by the student. Play the melody and improvise at least one chorus. May use play-along recording. Suggested blues include C Jam Blues, Straight No Chaser, Now\u2019s the Time, Sonnymoon for Two, Billie\u2019s Bounce, etc.<\/li>\n
  • Perform the melody and improvise on one jazz standard.\u00a0May use play-along recording. Suggested standards include Take the A Train, Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, Oleo, All The Things You Are, Body and Soul, Summertime, Stella By Starlight, etc.<\/li>\n
  • Perform one jazz solo transcription (written out solo performed by a reknowned jazz musician). Solo may be transcribed by student or purchased. Student should consider the style and inflection that is demonstrated by the solo artist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Jazz\u00a0Piano & Guitar<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • All requirements as above.<\/li>\n
    • Additional requirement: Comp (play harmonies)\u00a0for one chorus after playing the melody and before soloing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Jazz Bass<\/h3>\n
        \n
      • All requirements as above.<\/li>\n
      • Additional requirement:\u00a0Walk a bass line for one chorus on the jazz standard after playing\u00a0the melody and before solo. (Miles Davis\u2019 \u201cSo What\u201d is a good jazz standard for bass.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Jazz Drums<\/h3>\n
          \n
        • Perform a prepared drumset piece:\u00a0\u00a0A big band chart, transcription or published solo. Play-along tracks are preferred.<\/li>\n
        • Demonstration of time and soloing in the following styles:\n
            \n
          • Medium\u00a0Swing @ 140bpm<\/li>\n
          • Shuffle (Swing) @ 120bpm<\/li>\n
          • Uptempo Swing<\/li>\n
          • 1 Latin Groove (Samba, Bossa Nova, Songo, etc.)<\/li>\n
          • Rock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
          • Snare Drum: One solo or etude from\u00a0“Portraits in Rhythm” by Anthony Cirone or equivalent<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Graduate<\/span><\/h2>\n

            Jazz Instrumentalists<\/h3>\n
              \n
            • Scales:\u00a0Major scales and their derivative modes,\u00a0Whole tone scales,\u00a0Diminished scales (half-whole and whole-half),\u00a0Ascending melodic minor scales and their derivative modes<\/li>\n
            • Prepared Literature: Select one tune from each category play the melody (head) and improvise on the chord changes from memory.\n
                \n
              • Bebop Tunes:\u00a0Confirmation,\u00a0Donna Lee,\u00a0Groovin\u2019 High,\u00a0Half Nelson,\u00a0Joy Spring,\u00a0Stablemates<\/li>\n
              • Standard Tunes:\u00a0All The Things You Are,\u00a0Alone Together,\u00a0Have You Met Miss Jones?,\u00a0On Green Dolphin Street,\u00a0Stella By Starlight,\u00a0There Will Never Be Another You,\u00a0What Is This Thing Called Love<\/li>\n
              • Post-bop Tunes:\u00a0Dolphin Dance,\u00a0Giant Steps,\u00a0Inner Urge,\u00a0Moment’s Notice,\u00a0The Moontrane<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
              • Sight Reading:\u00a0Sight-read chord changes as well as typical jazz ensemble parts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                Jazz Drums<\/strong><\/p>\n

                  \n
                • Perform a prepared drumset piece:\u00a0\u00a0A big band chart, transcription or published solo. Play-along tracks are preferred.<\/li>\n
                • Perform a transcribed solo (transcribed by the student) of at least 16 measures. Choose a solo performed by a recognized jazz drumming master.<\/li>\n
                • Demonstration of time and soloing in the following styles:\n
                    \n
                  • Medium\u00a0Swing<\/li>\n
                  • Shuffle (Swing)<\/li>\n
                  • Uptempo Swing<\/li>\n
                  • Samba<\/li>\n
                  • Bossa Nova<\/li>\n
