{"id":22256,"date":"2021-05-12T09:17:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T14:17:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=22256"},"modified":"2021-05-14T08:19:41","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T13:19:41","slug":"marshall-counseling-center-to-host-barbershop-chat-to-discuss-mens-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/marshall-counseling-center-to-host-barbershop-chat-to-discuss-mens-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Counseling Center to host barbershop chat to discuss men\u2019s mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The Marshall University Counseling Center will host a barbershop chat at Legendary Cutz from 2 \u2013 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, in Huntington.<\/p>\n<p>The barbershop chat will incorporate discussion on men\u2019s mental health and struggles many minority men face, as well as wellness initiatives. Pizza and drinks will be provided and Marshall students can receive a 10% discount on a haircut.<\/p>\n<p>Director of the Marshall University Counseling Center Dr. Candace Layne says this is an important event because it provides an open forum to talk about men\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen are often known as \u2018silent sufferers\u2019 when it comes to mental health,\u201d said Layne. \u201cMen utilize mental health services far less than women, especially minority men. Opening up the conversation about mental health can help reduce the stigma, provide information for education and help normalize the conversation about men\u2019s mental health, emotions and feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The counseling center hosted its first barbershop chat during Men\u2019s Mental Health Week in March.
