{"id":22264,"date":"2021-05-13T13:34:16","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T18:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=22264"},"modified":"2021-05-14T08:19:33","modified_gmt":"2021-05-14T13:19:33","slug":"marshall-themed-little-free-library-installed-at-yeager-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/marshall-themed-little-free-library-installed-at-yeager-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Free Library installed at Yeager Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Marshall University Libraries and the Cabell County Career Technology Center (CCCTC) unveiled a Marshall-themed <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flittlefreelibrary.org%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7Cd833b40f06dd49cdc41008d9163a747e%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C637565262587363865%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=xbSl2nGmcF2IzzM3BcJ7EwzyyIuR%2BIxzZTbps7vNayc%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Little Free Library<\/a> (LFL) at Yeager Airport in Charleston (CRW) on Thursday, May 13.<\/p>\n<p>The Kelly green, M-shaped library was created from an idea by Dr. Kelli Johnson, associate university librarian at Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was traveling, pre-COVID, and spotted a \u201ctake one \u2013 leave one\u201d book cart at the San Diego airport,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cAs a librarian, I was so excited that the airport was encouraging literacy and reading.\u00a0When Marshall announced the aviation program, I felt like it was perfect timing to once again showcase how Marshall University is committed to education and empowerment of the people of West Virginia. I wanted to show that learning has no boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The library was created by students in Bret Masters\u2019 building technology class at the CCCTC. Johnson said it was Johnny Bradley, supervisor of library operations at Marshall, who suggested reaching out to Masters in hopes he would be willing to take on the build with his class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to say I love a challenge,\u201d Masters said.\u00a0\u201cThis project would be a challenge in itself with the designing, cutting of angles and the construction.\u00a0However, this past year with everything going on, it has pushed the challenge to a whole different level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking together through problems and difficulties has been the West Virginia way.\u00a0This bookcase project has exemplified that through the cooperation\u00a0of everyone involved.\u00a0When the goal is to educate young students and the people in your community, you need a team.\u00a0This team effort with Marshall University, <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Flittlefreelibrary.org%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7Cd833b40f06dd49cdc41008d9163a747e%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C637565262587363865%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=hAhqRL0aO3ESyqWRu7NRI3NAoxjf9OCSPmEE5EfmLMg%3D&amp;reserved=0\">LittleFreeLibrary.org\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0and the Building Technology students has strengthened our community,\u201d Masters said.<\/p>\n<p>Current participating students include Cody Adkins, Landyn Bowen, Haidn Cook,\u00a0Landon Hanna, Nathaniel Harless, Jordon Hicks, Chase Rood, Tristin Sigman, Larry Simpson and Keegan Wooten. In addition, the following students helped with the project during the 2020 academic year: Anthony Adkins, Johnathan Jarrell, Dyllon Porter, Lane Ramey, Nick Ride, Logan Rider, Caden Robinette, Nash Ryder and Cameron Simons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollaborating with each of these groups to bring a Little Free Library to Yeager Airport was an amazing effort that allowed us to show off some talent, school spirit and a collective commitment to promote reading in the community,\u201d said Dr. Monica Brooks, associate vice president for online learning and dean of libraries.<\/p>\n<p>The new library at CRW is in the process of being registered as an official <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flittlefreelibrary.org%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7Cd833b40f06dd49cdc41008d9163a747e%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C637565262587373815%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=Oxqx2S9mrYICj6lye4%2BBeI1dIXqEk7XsF0anTWiQTPg%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Little Free Library<\/a>. Once the charter sign arrives and is installed, the library will be included on the <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flittlefreelibrary.org%2Fourmap%2F&amp;data=04%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7Cd833b40f06dd49cdc41008d9163a747e%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C637565262587373815%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&amp;sdata=zOHdeQ%2BMcpwAQIv019VBxgr0winrX2NFBKVcExSDe9g%3D&amp;reserved=0\">world map<\/a> of all registered LFLs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the steward for two local Little Free Libraries, I was very familiar with the LFL program and thought these would make great additions to the LFL world map,\u201d Johnson added<\/p>\n<p>In addition to promoting literacy by providing books to guests traveling through Yeager Airport, the library will also provide information about Marshall University and the degree programs offered through Marshall\u2019s new Division of Aviation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pride ourselves at CRW on being a family-friendly airport,\u201d said Yeager Airport Director and CEO Nick Keller. \u201cHaving a Little Free Library at Yeager Airport is another great opportunity for families to pass the time while waiting for their flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is another great opportunity for CRW to team up with Marshall University,\u201d Keller continued. \u201cThe students at the Cabell County Career Center did a wonderful job building the Little Free Library, and we are proud to have it here at Yeager Airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marshall President Jerome A. Gilbert stopped by to see the new library in place at Yeager Airport and to help stock the shelves with a personal donation of books.<\/p>\n<p>Patrons are encouraged to give to and take from the Little Free Library while visiting Yeager Airport. The LFL will be maintained by Marshall University Libraries.
