{"id":23662,"date":"2022-04-06T17:01:30","date_gmt":"2022-04-06T21:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=23662"},"modified":"2022-04-11T11:10:35","modified_gmt":"2022-04-11T15:10:35","slug":"marshalls-wmul-fm-takes-home-regional-national-and-international-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/marshalls-wmul-fm-takes-home-regional-national-and-international-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"WMUL-FM takes home regional, national and international awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Students from Marshall University\u2019s public radio station, WMUL-FM, have received several awards this semester, including honors from: the ninth annual \u201cThe Virginias\u201d Associated Press Broadcasters awards ceremony; the Muse Creative Awards Competition for 2022; the 82<sup>nd<\/sup> Annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference\u2019s 13<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Awards Ceremony; and the International AVA Digital Awards 2022 Competition.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Marshall\u2019s student chapter of the National Electronic Media Association\/National Broadcasting Society, Alpha Epsilon Rho, has been recognized as a Model Chapter for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chuck G. Bailey, professor of radio-television production and management in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Marshall and current NBS-AERho chapter adviser, said it\u2019s the first time the chapter has received the recognition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am thrilled that the national board acknowledged the Marshall student broadcasters\u2019 dedication, under the guidance of student chapter president Makaylah Wheeler, to maintain their chapter\u2019s active status during the COVID pandemic,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cBeing recognized under these circumstances at this national level speaks well for Marshall University, the College of Arts and Media and the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here is a rundown of awards received recently by WMUL:<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>\u201cThe Virginias,\u201d presented by Associated Press Broadcasters<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>First place, Best Station Promo<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cWMUL-FM Robot Station Promo,\u201d an in-house promotional announcement that was first broadcast in July 2021 and is still in rotation. The promo was written and produced by Zane Bowles, a recent graduate from Sandstone, West Virginia.<\/li>\n<li><u>Second place, Outstanding Sports Operation<\/u>: This award was presented to the FM 88 Sports Staff led by the 2021 Spring Semester WMUL-FM Sports Director Nick Verzolini, a recent graduate from Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, and 2021 Fall Semester WMUL-FM Sports Director Andrew Rogers, a senior from Clarksburg.<\/li>\n<li><u>Second place, Best Sports Play-by-Play<\/u>: This award was presented for WMUL-FM\u2019s broadcast of the Marshall University versus University of North Texas men\u2019s college basketball game, played Feb. 27, 2021, at the Cam Henderson Center. The students calling the men\u2019s basketball broadcast over FM 88.1 were: Play-by-Play announcer Andrew Rogers; Color Commentator Nick Verzolini; and Engineers Johnathan Edwards, a sophomore from Culloden, and Grant Goodrich, a recent graduate from Huntington.<\/li>\n<li><u>Second place, Best Station Promo<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cNoisy Neighbors Promo,\u201d an in-house promotional announcement that was first broadcast in July 2021 and is still in rotation. The promo was written and produced by Zane Bowles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>7th Annual Muse Creative Awards Competition <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Gold Awards, Audio\/Radio Ad\/Promo<\/u>: Two Gold Awards were presented for \u201cWMUL-FM Robot Station Promo\u201d and \u201cNoisy Neighbors Promo\u201d by Zane Bowles.<\/li>\n<li><u>Silver Award, Audio Program<\/u>:\u00a0 This award was presented for \u201cRevitalization of Huntington,\u201d written and produced by Grant Goodrich and broadcast on Sept. 3, 2021.<\/li>\n<li><u>Silver Award, Audio Program<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cHoops in the Hills,\u201d written and produced by Andrew Rogers and broadcast on April 30, 2021. The documentary is about the origins and growth of the statewide radio program \u201cBasketball Friday Night in West Virginia,\u201d which is broadcast and video streamed from the W. Page Pitt\u2019s School of Journalism and Mass Communications\u2019 Television Studio A on the Marshall University campus.<\/li>\n<li><u>Silver Award, Audio Program<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cPursuing the Dream (Episode One)\u201d written and produced by Nick Verzolini and broadcast Sept. 9, 2021. The documentary featured WMUL-FM alumni who are professional play-by-play announcers: Randy Lee, the radio voice of Western Kentucky University; Doug Birdsong, the radio voice of Bucknell University; and Adam Cavalier, the radio voice of Carson-Newman University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Conference\u2019s 13<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Awards Ceremony<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>First place, Best Sports Talk Program<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cInside Conference USA\u201d with hosts Andrew Rogers; Justin Zimmer, a junior from Bethesda, Maryland; and Ben Cower, a sophomore from Purcellville, Virginia. It was broadcast and made available online Oct. 27, 2021.<\/li>\n<li><u>Finalist, Audio Newscast<\/u>: This recognition was presented for the \u201c5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88,\u201d broadcast April 28, 2021. Students who participated in this newscast were: Producer David Adkins, a senior from Huntington; Anchor Makaylah Wheeler, a senior from Huntington; Anchor Zane Townsend, a sophomore from Proctorville, Ohio; Weather Reporter Bradley Wells, a recent graduate from Huntington; and Sports Reporter Jayden Taylor, a senior from Nitro.<\/li>\n<li><u>Finalist, Best Campus News Coverage<\/u>: This recognition was given for \u201cVaccines for Students,\u201d written and produced by Alex Jackson, a senior from Hurricane. It was broadcast during \u201cThe 5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88,\u201d on March 18, 2021, and made available online.<\/li>\n<li><u>Finalist, Best Public Affairs Program<\/u>: This recognition was given for \u201cRevitalization of Huntington\u201d by Grant Goodrich.<\/li>\n<li><u>Finalist, Best Documentary Program<\/u>: This recognition was given for \u201cHoops in the Hills\u201d by Andrew Rogers.<\/li>\n<li><u>Finalist, Best Sports Update<\/u>: This recognition was given for \u201cThe FM 88 Sports Report\u201d anchored by Andrew Rogers, during the \u201c5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88\u201d broadcast on Oct. 7, 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>International AVA Digital Awards 2022 Competition<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><u>Platinum Award, Audio\/Radio News Package\/Podcast<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cCampus Pro-Choice Protests,\u201d written and produced by Tyler Kennett, a senior from Rock, West Virginia, and broadcast Sept. 20, 2021, during the 5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88 and also made available online.<\/li>\n<li><u>Platinum Award, Audio\/Radio News Package\/Podcast<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cFountain Package: Strength in Remembrance,\u201d written and produced by Makaylah Wheeler and broadcast during \u201cThe 5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88,\u201d on Nov. 12, 2021, and made available online.<\/li>\n<li><u>Platinum Award, Audio\/Radio Documentary Program<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cRevitalization of Huntington\u201d by Grant Goodrich.<\/li>\n<li><u>Platinum Award, Audio\/Radio Documentary Program<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cHoops in the Hills\u201d by Andrew Rogers.<\/li>\n<li><u>Gold Award<\/u><u>, Audio\/Radio News Package\/Podcast<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cChanges for the 50<sup>th<\/sup> Marshall Memorial Service,\u201d written and produced by Makaylah Wheeler and broadcast during \u201cThe 5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88,\u201d Nov. 13, 2020, and made available online.<\/li>\n<li><u>Gold Award, Audio\/Radio Documentary Program<\/u>: This award was presented for \u201cPursuing the Dream (Episode One)\u201d by Nick Verzolini.<\/li>\n<li><u>Gold Award, Audio\/Radio Podcast Promotion<\/u>: This was presented for \u201cWMUL-FM Robot Station Promo\u201d by Zane Bowles.<\/li>\n<li><u>Gold Award, Audio\/Radio\/Podcast Sports Package<\/u>: This was presented for \u201cVitor Dias, CUSA Soccer Player of the Week,\u201d written and produced by Christian Palmer, a senior from Kenova, broadcast Sept. 10, 2021, during \u201cHerd Roundup,\u201d and also made available online.<\/li>\n<li><u>Gold Award, Audio Sports Play-by-Place Programming<\/u>: This award was presented for WMUL-FM\u2019s broadcast of the Marshall University versus University of North Texas men\u2019s college basketball game Feb. 27, 2021.<\/li>\n<li><u>Honorable Mention, Audio Newscast<\/u>: This was presented for the \u201c5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88\u201d broadcast Oct. 11, 2021.
