{"id":23772,"date":"2022-04-26T16:48:48","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T20:48:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=23772"},"modified":"2022-04-28T10:31:17","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T14:31:17","slug":"marshall-university-names-drinko-distinguished-fellow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/marshall-university-names-drinko-distinguished-fellow\/","title":{"rendered":"27th Drinko Distinguished Fellow named"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Dr. Habiba Chirchir, an associate professor of biological sciences at Marshall University, has been named the 27<sup>th<\/sup> John Deaver Drinko Distinguished Fellow.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement of her appointment was made by executive director Dr. Montserrat Miller during the annual Drinko Symposium in the Memorial Student Center Saturday, April 23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Chirchir carries a full course load at Marshall while publishing in high profile academic journals and engaging in impressive education outreach efforts,\u201d Miller said. \u00a0\u201cShe did extraordinary work during the pandemic in coordinating the transition of all Marshall\u2019s Human Anatomy teaching labs to the online platform.\u00a0 She has authored twelve peer-reviewed publications since 2016 and her most recent scholarly article, appearing in the <em>Royal Society Open Science <\/em>journal, was covered in <em>Science News<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 Habiba is uniquely poised to attract international visibility for Marshall University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her nominator, Dr.\u00a0 F. Robin O\u2019Keefe, described her as \u201cone of the best young paleoanthropologists in the field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to serving as a Marshall faculty member, Chirchir is a research associate in the Human Origins Program at the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of American History.\u00a0 Among the four external research awards she has obtained since 2020 is a highly prestigious Leakey Foundation grant.<\/p>\n<p>Chirchir has developed initiatives to improve the quality of anatomy education for schoolchildren. In 2018 and 2019, she conducted training in evolutionary biology for rural Kenyan secondary school teachers.\u00a0 More recently, she worked with colleague Dr. Suzanne Straight to secure a $50,000 grant from the American Association for Anatomy to provide advanced anatomical modalities to West Virginia high school teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Chirchir says she is honored to have been selected as a fellow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a distinct privilege and honor to be named the 27<sup>th<\/sup> fellow of the Drinko Academy, \u201cChirchir said. \u201cWith this award comes an expectation that I will contribute at a high level in all my responsibilities at Marshall \u2013 teaching, research and outreach activities.
