{"id":24114,"date":"2022-06-13T15:35:35","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T19:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=24114"},"modified":"2022-06-13T15:53:34","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T19:53:34","slug":"the-movable-project-new-ohio-review-announce-winners-of-recovery-themed-writing-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2022\/06\/the-movable-project-new-ohio-review-announce-winners-of-recovery-themed-writing-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"The Movable Project &amp; New Ohio Review Announce Winners of Recovery-Themed Writing Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>HUNTINGTON, W.Va.<\/strong> \u2013 The Movable Project, a grassroots digital archive of recovery stories, housed at Marshall University, recently announced the winners of the 2022 Recovery Writing Contest, a partnership with the New Ohio Review, a national literary magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Judges cons<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/files\/Marshall-BlockMLogo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23778 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/files\/Marshall-BlockMLogo-300x205.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/files\/Marshall-BlockMLogo-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/files\/Marshall-BlockMLogo.png 830w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>idered a number of poems, stories and first-hand accounts.\u00a0 First-place winners are Kari Gunter-Seymour (Ohio) and Kandi Workman (West Virginia).<\/p>\n<p>Of Gunter-Seymour\u2019s poem \u201cTo Save a Life,\u201d one judge remarked that it grabs \u201cthe reader from the beginning and doesn\u2019t let go; even the ending begs the reader to start over and immediately read the poem again. I can smell the campfire, hear the barking coyotes, taste the creek water. I simply love this poem.\u201d Gunter-Seymour is the poet laureate of Ohio. Her most recent book of poems, \u201cA Place So Deep Inside America It Can\u2019t Be Seen,\u201d was awarded the 2020 Ohio Poet of the Year Award.<\/p>\n<p>Workman\u2019s essay \u201cIce Cream,\u201d was praised for its ability to \u201ccapture the humbling experience of those awkward, initial interactions [in the recovery process], trying to find common ground . . . establishing mutual respect via swapping war stories and most importantly, getting gut-level honest about the severity of their illness.\u201d\u00a0 Workman is a community organizer with Boone County Health (WV).<\/p>\n<p>The Movable Project also selected an honorable mention: an untitled story by Olivia Marie of West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>The contributions by first-place winners are forthcoming in the New Ohio Review and at the Movable Project website, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moveableproject.org\">www.movableproject.org<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe honorable mention and other qualifying submissions will also be published by Movable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are extremely grateful to the New Ohio Review and the wonderful judges for making this contest possible,\u201d Kristen Lillvis, co-editor of Movable said. \u201cWe are excited for everyone to read these winning works and be just as moved by them as we were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Movable welcomes and publishes creative, nonfiction, and biographical writing on the theme of recovery all year around.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HUNTINGTON, W.Va. \u2013 The Movable Project, a grassroots digital archive of recovery stories, housed at Marshall University, recently announced the winners of the 2022 Recovery Writing Contest, a partnership with the New Ohio Review, a national literary magazine.
