Stringer Writers Series continues with renowned poet, author"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The Marshall University A.E. Stringer Visiting Writers Series continues Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Hall 154 on Marshall\u2019s Huntington campus, with Dr. Isabel Duarte-Gray and Dr. Karen Salyer McElmurray.<\/p>\n<p>Duarte-Gray\u2019s work focuses on Latinx literary production and book history. Her first poetry collection, <em>Even Shorn<\/em>, debuted with Sarabande Brooks and was included in the Boston Globe\u2019s Best Books of 2021. She\u00a0 earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in English and Russian from Amherst College, and a Ph.D. in English from Harvard University.<\/p>\n<p>McElmurray\u2019s memoir, <em>Surrendered Child<\/em>, won the AWP Award Series for Creative Nonfiction and was listed as a notable book by the National Book Critics Circle. She\u2019s the author of multiple novels, including <em>Wanting Radiance <\/em>(University Press of Kentucky, 2020), and a memoir-in-essays called <em>Voice Lessons <\/em>(Iris Press, 2021). She holds a bachelor\u2019s degree from Berea College and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rachael Peckham, professor of English and coordinator of the Stringer Visiting Writers Series at Marshall, organized the reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo hear these two highly accomplished Kentucky-based writers read together is pretty exciting,\u201d Peckham said. \u201cAlthough their work is very different, in terms of genre and approach, I think the audience will recognize the themes, events and characters that were inspired by the writers\u2019 mutual experiences, growing up in Appalachia.
