Spruill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Marshall University\u2019s Amicus Curiae Lecture Series on Constitutional Democracy continues Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in the Brad D. Smith Foundation Hall, with a lecture by Marjorie J. Spruill. Spruill is distinguished professor emerita of history from the University of South Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Spruill\u2019s lecture, titled \u201cDivided We Stand: The Battle over Women\u2019s Rights and Family Values that Polarized American Politics,\u201d will focus on the key role that women have played in shaping American politics from the 1960s to the present and is based on her book <em>Divided We Stand: The Battle over Women\u2019s Rights and Family Values that Polarized American Politics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to welcome Marjorie Spruill to the lecture series for a second time,\u201d said Patricia Proctor, director of the Simon Perry Center for Constitutional Democracy, which sponsors the Amicus Curiae Lecture Series. \u201cShe gave a phenomenal and very popular lecture in 2020, focusing on the story of how the 19<sup>th<\/sup> Amendment enshrining women\u2019s right to vote was finally ratified; I expect this lecture to be incredibly informative and entertaining as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spruill\u2019s lecture will take a look at the last sixty years of the women\u2019s rights movement, which saw the rise of the modern women\u2019s rights movement to a period of peak success in the 1970s, including Congressional passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, the mobilization of conservative women in opposition to that movement, and the competition of the two women\u2019s movements for influence on federal policy, all of which affected the development of politics as we know it today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe debates that occurred in the 1970s continue today. Marjorie Spruill will teach us that history and will explain its present-day significance, and will do so from the perspective of one who interviewed many of the participants in the events, including a former President and First Lady and the leading activists for women,\u201d Proctor said.<\/p>\n<p>Spruill will dive deep into the partisanship of women\u2019s rights and illustrate its impact today as she discusses her book <em>Divided We Stand<\/em>. Spruill is also the editor of <em>One Woman, One Vote: Rediscovering the Woman Suffrage Movement, <\/em>which is the companion volume to the PBS documentary \u201cOne Woman, One Vote.\u201d\u00a0 The lecture is sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/spc\/amicus-curiae-lecture-series-on-constitutional-democracy\/\">Marshall\u2019s Simon Perry Center for Constitutional Democracy<\/a> with support from the West Virginia Humanities Council.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marshall University\u2019s Amicus Curiae Lecture Series on Constitutional Democracy continues Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in the Brad D.
