Edwards School of Medicine.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>A retrospective study analyzed the presence of 20 different elements, thyroid hormones and vitamin D levels in umbilical cord blood collected at birth. The levels were compared with how well a child met developmental milestones as part of their well-child examinations conducted between birth and age 5.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, published last month in <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdoi.org%2F10.1016%2Fj.biopha.2022.114085&amp;data=05%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7C31cd1f2533f2453f6f6408daff13fb9f%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C638102758673937736%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=B6DJ0dnj58mmRzNo9IWpaThS6FXsRJiTOiLXWWa5FXA%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><em>Biomedicine &amp; Pharmacotherapy<\/em><\/a>, an open-access, peer-reviewed medical journal focused on clinical and basic medicine and pharmacology, showed that vitamin D levels were associated with a delay in fine motor development and thyroid hormone levels were associated with cognitive development. Certain metals such as lead, mercury, copper and manganese were associated with language, cognitive or motor skill development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur study demonstrates the importance of the in-utero environment,\u201d said Jesse Cottrell, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and lead author on the study. \u201cThe study found multiple associations between umbilical cord essential and toxic elements, thyroid levels and vitamin D on childhood development for a pronounced time after birth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery little existing research addresses the long-term effects on child development of in-utero exposure to environmental agents,\u201d said Monica Valentovic, Ph.D., professor of biomedical sciences and toxicology research cluster coordinator at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and corresponding author on the study. \u201cWith the original umbilical cord blood samples collected in 2013, having long-term follow-up on developmental outcomes adds significantly to the literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chelsea Nelson, M.D., Catherine Waldron, Mackenzie Bergeron and Abigail Samson also served as co-authors on the abstract. The work is supported by the\u00a0Robert C. Byrd Center for Rural Health at Marshall University, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the translational research pilot\u00a0grant program at the Joan C.
