{"id":25115,"date":"2023-03-01T16:43:40","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T21:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=25115"},"modified":"2023-03-06T13:46:00","modified_gmt":"2023-03-06T18:46:00","slug":"thundering-word-to-compete-in-tokyo-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/thundering-word-to-compete-in-tokyo-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Thundering Word to compete in Tokyo event"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The Marshall University speech and debate team, Thundering Word, will compete this month at the International Forensic Association Tournament in Tokyo, Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The Thundering Word competes in the National Forensic Association throughout the country, competing in four basic areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Oral Interpretation of literature (prose, poetry, duo, programmed oral interpretation)<\/li>\n<li>Prepared speeches (informative, persuasive, after dinner, rhetorical criticism)<\/li>\n<li>Limited preparation speeches (impromptu, extemporaneous)<\/li>\n<li>Debate<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The team is led by the director of forensics for the Department of Communication Studies, Clara Adkins. Adkins says they\u2019re excited for the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I received the invitation from the organization, I immediately went to Dr. Bookwalter, dean of the College of Liberal Arts; he looked at me and said let\u2019s see what we can do,\u201d Adkins said. \u201cSixty days later, I got an answer that through donations from supporters and the Maier Foundation, this once-in-a-lifetime-experience was going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program is looking for additional help as they put together their plan to compete in Tokyo. They\u2019re accepting monetary donations through the Marshall University Foundation (COLA-Debate Program). Adkins says the team appreciates the support they\u2019ve received thus far from the Marshall University community.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen members of the team qualified for the trip to Tokyo:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ben Chambers, Athens, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>George Urling, Midkiff, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Matthew Lebo, Vienna, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Gabe Corbin, Point Pleasant, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Bryson Connolly, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina<\/li>\n<li>Mason Pomeroy, Nettie, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Olivia Hindman, St. Albans, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Liv Stockwin, Homer, New York<\/li>\n<li>Kia Booth, Proctorville, Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Adley Fry, Proctorville, Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Lily Mays, Martinsburg, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Ella Hiles, Sharonville, Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Aaryn Bonyak, Huntington, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Grace Stowers, Huntington, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Zoe Davin, Huntington, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Frances Harper, Huntington, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Aayush Damai, Huntington West Virginia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The team is coached and judged by Denise Parks (administrative assistant), Austin Fry (graduate assistant), Michael Shirzadian (debate instructor), Nancy Jackson (assistant director of forensics\/instructor) and Adkins.
