{"id":25164,"date":"2023-03-23T14:35:01","date_gmt":"2023-03-23T18:35:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=25164"},"modified":"2023-03-23T14:35:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T18:35:01","slug":"2023-charlotte-schmidlapp-lecture-to-feature-mikki-kendall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/2023-charlotte-schmidlapp-lecture-to-feature-mikki-kendall\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 Charlotte Schmidlapp Lecture to feature Mikki Kendall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Marshall University\u2019s Women\u2019s, Gender and Sexuality Studies will present the 2023 Charlotte Schmidlapp Distinguished Lecture in Women\u2019s Studies Wednesday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Don Morris Room in the Memorial Student Center.<\/p>\n<p>Mikki Kendall, the New York Times best-selling author of <em>Hood Feminisms: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot<\/em> and the author of <em>Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists: A Graphic History of Women\u2019s Fight for Their Rights<\/em>, will be the featured speaker. Her lecture, \u201cMultimodal Feminisms of the Future,\u201d is sponsored by Fifth Third Bank and the Schmidlapp Family.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hilary Brewster, associate professor of English and the director of the Women\u2019s, Gender and Sexuality Studies program, says Kendall\u2019s works present a great look at feminism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI read <em>Hood Feminism<\/em> this past summer, and instantly thought to myself, \u2018I want her to come to campus as my Schmidlapp!\u2019 Her ideas about women and gender and specific populations was an immediate connection to my students, my friends, anyone living in Appalachia, really,\u201d Brewster said.<\/p>\n<p>Kendall has been featured in TIME, The Washington Post, Salon, MSNBC, Good Morning America and the Daily Show, among many others. She\u2019s an author, activist and cultural critic. Her work often focuses on media representation, events, food and the history of feminism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Kendall is an absolutely fantastic \u2018get\u2019 for us\u2014most people don\u2019t understand the concept of speaker fees, and why would you? I didn\u2019t! Mikki and her team at Gotham Artists could not have been more helpful and generous when working with me to figure out how to bring her to campus. During our initial Zoom meeting, Mikki expressed how excited she was to actually come to West Virginia\u2014and not just drive through on her way back home from another gig. We are beyond lucky!\u201d Brewster said.<\/p>\n<p>Kendall was born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
