{"id":25552,"date":"2023-06-13T14:46:03","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T18:46:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=25552"},"modified":"2023-06-13T17:00:04","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T21:00:04","slug":"marshall-university-program-among-top-in-the-u-s-for-preparing-future-teachers-in-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2023\/06\/marshall-university-program-among-top-in-the-u-s-for-preparing-future-teachers-in-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall University program among top in the U.S.  for preparing future teachers in reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The undergraduate teacher preparation program at Marshall University has been recognized by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) for its rigorous preparation of future teachers in how to teach reading, earning an \u201cA\u201d grade in NCTQ\u2019s new report, <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nctq.org%2Freview%2Fstandard%2FReading-Foundations&amp;data=05%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7C7c50dbcb483c49d12e8108db6c38eecb%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C638222764008018730%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=g%2BiIyVTIdwApb1j1omFbbC9P2Ojb3ek9WVnYESxIdoM%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Teacher Prep Review: Strengthening Elementary Reading Instruction<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuccess in reading leads to success in all other subject areas,\u201d said Dr. Teresa Eagle, dean of Marshall\u2019s College of Education and Professional Development. \u201cBy using proven methods of teaching reading, we can train teachers that will lead their students well in all subject areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The program is among just 23% nationwide and three in West Virginia to earn an \u201cA\u201d from NCTQ for meeting standards set by literacy experts for coverage of the most effective methods of reading instruction\u2014often called the \u201cscience of reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>National data show that more than one-third of fourth-grade students\u2014over 1.3 million children\u2014cannot read at a basic level. By preparing teachers in the methods that research has shown to work best, we can change these devastating results.<\/p>\n<p>To evaluate the quality of preparation being provided, a team of experts at NCTQ analyzed syllabi, including lecture schedules and topics, background reading materials, class assessments, assignments, and opportunities to practice instruction in required literacy courses for undergraduate elementary teacher candidates at Marshall University. To earn an \u201cA,\u201d programs needed to meet NCTQ\u2019s targets for coverage of the five core components of scientifically based reading instruction\u2014<strong>phonemic awareness<\/strong>, <strong>phonics<\/strong>, <strong>fluency<\/strong>, <strong>vocabulary <\/strong>and <strong>comprehension<\/strong>\u2014and not teach more than three instructional methods that are unsupported by the research on effective reading instruction.<\/p>\n<p>While some portion of children will learn to read naturally, over five decades of <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fies.ed.gov%2Fncee%2Fwwc%2FDocs%2FPracticeGuide%2Fwwc_foundationalreading_040717.pdf&amp;data=05%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7C7c50dbcb483c49d12e8108db6c38eecb%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C638222764008018730%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=%2Fiuo9sf6cK%2FkLiyuUW67%2ByCXZJr%2FCar4LIj7IAdI5cE%3D&amp;reserved=0\">research<\/a> have established the components of explicit, scientifically based reading instruction that help most students become successful readers. <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.aft.org%2Fperiodical%2Famerican-educator%2Ffall-2004%2Favoiding-devastating-downward-spiral&amp;data=05%7C01%7CSTams%40marshall.edu%7C7c50dbcb483c49d12e8108db6c38eecb%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C638222764008018730%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=E%2BXutPgi1iC45UgW2sqT4t5mSfyg5vCH2KqwHCi7eIQ%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Research suggests<\/a> that over 90% of children could learn to read if their teachers used instructional methods grounded in the science of reading.<\/p>\n<p>The new NCTQ analysis of teacher preparation programs\u2019 coverage of the science of reading was developed over the course of two years, involving teams of literacy experts, researchers, teacher preparation leaders, and educators. NCTQ evaluated 693 traditional undergraduate and graduate programs across the country, including 10 in West Virginia.
