{"id":25867,"date":"2023-10-05T15:05:26","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=25867"},"modified":"2023-10-05T15:05:26","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:05:26","slug":"us-them-podcast-host-invites-local-community-to-discuss-trust-in-science-during-live-taping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2023\/10\/us-them-podcast-host-invites-local-community-to-discuss-trust-in-science-during-live-taping\/","title":{"rendered":"Us &amp; Them podcast host invites local community to discuss trust in science during live taping"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>HUNTINGTON, W.Va<\/strong>. &#8211; Award-winning podcaster Trey Kay is bringing his program Us &amp; Them to Marshall University\u2019s campus for a deep discussion about diminished trust in science.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiminished Trust: How Do We Restore Faith in Science?\u201d is scheduled for 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19, in Marshall University\u2019s Drinko Library Atrium. Kay will talk with Dr. Jonathan Zimmerman, University of Pennsylvania\u2019s education historian and author of \u201cWhose America? Culture Wars in the Public Schools\u201d; Dr. Habiba Chichir, Marshall University\u2019s biological anthropologist; and Dr. Adam Franks, M.D., associate residency director for the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The event is free and open to the public, but registration is recommended because space is limited. Registration is available at https:\/\/bit.ly\/3RMEZun and includes an audience Q&amp;A segment with preference given to students. The live event will be taped for use in a future episode of Us &amp; Them. The event is co-sponsored by Marshall University\u2019s John Deaver Drinko Academy, the West Virginia Humanities Council and West Virginia Public Broadcasting, the broadcasting home of Us &amp; Them.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Kay and his team hosted a \u201cDiminished Trust&#8221; event at West Virginia University that focused on waning public trust in journalism and the news media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrust is in short supply in America these days, &#8221; Kay said. &#8220;Across the board and across the political spectrum people seem to lack trust in our government\u2026 in many of our<br \/>\nagencies and organizations &#8211; even in each other. That\u2019s why our Us &amp; Them team is staging these conversations to encourage citizens to consider how long our society can sustain this erosion of trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current diminishment of trust in science is one expression of anti-intellectualism, a longer trend in our culture, and one which waxes and wanes,\u201d says Dr. Monserrat Miller,<br \/>\nexecutive director of Marshall\u2019s John Deaver Drinko Academy. \u201cDiminishing trust in science, though, is something that we need to explore and discuss because it poses a<br \/>\nrange of dangers from public health to cynicism about the idea of truth itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guests for this event include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zimmerman<\/strong> is a Professor of History of Education and the Berkowitz<br \/>\nProfessor in Education at the University of Pennsylvania. A former Peace Corps<br \/>\nvolunteer and high school teacher, Zimmerman is the author of \u201cWhose America?<br \/>\nCulture Wars in the Public Schools\u201d (University of Chicago Press, 2nd ed.) and eight<br \/>\nother books. Zimmerman is also a columnist at the Philadelphia Inquirer and a frequent<br \/>\ncontributor to the Washington Post, the New York Review of Books, and other popular<br \/>\npublications. Zimmerman taught for 20 years at New York University, where he<br \/>\nreceived its Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chirchir<\/strong> is a biological anthropologist and anatomist. Her research focuses<br \/>\non understanding the relationship between changes in skeletal anatomy and behavior<br \/>\nby investigating trabecular and cortical bone. She conducts comparative analyses of<br \/>\nanatomical features in fossil human ancestors, modern humans, other primates and<br \/>\nnon-primate animals including dogs and big cats using CT imaging. Chirchir earned a<br \/>\nB.A. from the University of Nairobi, an M.A. from New York University, and a Ph.D. from<br \/>\nGeorge Washington University. Chirchir is a research associate at the National Museum<br \/>\nof Natural History, Smithsonian Institution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Franks<\/strong> is a family medicine physician at Marshall Health, and a professor<br \/>\nand vice chair of the department of family and community health at the Marshall University<br \/>\nJoan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Franks\u2019 practice provides full-spectrum care for<br \/>\nchildren and adults, including obstetric and gynecologic care. His research areas<br \/>\ninclude COVID-19 protocols, opioid monitoring protocols, and blood borne pathogen<br \/>\nexposure monitoring protocol adherence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kay<\/strong> is the creator and host of Us &amp; Them, a podcast\/radio program distributed by<br \/>\nPRX that airs on West Virginia Public Broadcasting. Kay\u2019s passion for reporting on<br \/>\nculture wars began in his hometown of Charleston, West Virginia, with &#8220;The Great Textbook<br \/>\nWar&#8221; (2009), a radio documentary. He followed that award winning work with \u201cThe Long<br \/>\nGame: Texas\u2019 Ongoing Battle for the Direction of the Classroom\u201d (2013), which he<br \/>\nresearched as a Spencer Fellow for Education Reporting at the Columbia Journalism<br \/>\nSchool. He\u2019s produced for This American Life, The New Yorker Radio Hour,<br \/>\nMarketplace, American RadioWorks, Morning Edition, Inside Appalachia and PBS<br \/>\nFrontline. Kay also taught at the Columbia Journalism School, Marist College and the<br \/>\nState University of New York at New Paltz. He splits his time between New York\u2019s<br \/>\nHudson Valley and West Virginia&#8217;s Kanawha Valley.<\/p>\n<p>The taping at Marshall is the second in a series of public Us &amp; Them events focused on<br \/>\ndiminished trust in America.
