Medical students from the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine volunteered with organizations throughout the Huntington community this week ahead of National Volunteer Week.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

More than 70 students participated in projects including walking and playing with dogs at the Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter, working on exterior maintenance for Hospice of Huntington and picking up trash and debris around Ritter Park. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cMedical students share a common desire to make a difference,\u201d said Iram Kingson, a second-year medical student at Marshall University. \u201cBut even before we become physicians, we can volunteer our time and energy in our community to make the world a better place.\u201d <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Additional<\/span> medical <\/span>students <\/span>will wrap up this <\/span>week of service<\/span> Saturday <\/span>at <\/span>either <\/span>Facing Hunger Foodbank or Marshall Medical Outreach<\/span> (MMO)<\/span>, <\/span>Marshall\u2019s<\/span> monthly student-led medical <\/span>outreach <\/span>that<\/span> provides free medical care to the homeless, unemployed and those at risk for homelessness <\/span>in Huntington<\/span>.<\/span> Under the guidance of School of Medicine faculty physicians and community volunteers, MMO offers on-site clinical and social services<\/span>, including <\/span>health screenings<\/span>, <\/span>physical exams<\/span>, <\/span>immunizations<\/span>, <\/span>ophthalmology services<\/span>, <\/span>referrals<\/span> and <\/span>over-the-counter medications<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Throughout the year, <\/span>students<\/span> and <\/span>trainees <\/span>across<\/span> the School of Medicine <\/span>volunteer with various <\/span>social service<\/span> organizations,<\/span> many of whom<\/span> provide care to underinsured and un<\/span>insured patients<\/span>. <\/span>On average, <\/span>the <\/span>students <\/span>log more than <\/span>7,000 <\/span>hours<\/span> of community service annually.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
