As part of the national celebration, Marshall hosted events, highlighted resources, shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/moments\/2024\/11\/07\/a-path-of-purpose-and-perseverance\/\">success stories<\/a> and launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/g25P4Yj6yB8?si=tmUFpdQD1qB42i-w\">new video<\/a> highlighting those who were the first in their families to pursue higher education.<\/p>\n<p>FGCC is an annual opportunity to\u00a0raise awareness of the first-generation college student identity. Since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.coenet.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Ctiffany.davis%40marshall.edu%7C4a4bd3ae59764d588bd108dced4750a9%7C239ab2783bba4c78b41d8508a541e025%7C0%7C0%7C638646137764162147%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=94UHbiFZjrELvz7dnUfNrJwBpgToets%2F1oAw6jhB9cY%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Council for Opportunity in Education<\/a>\u00a0(COE) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firstgen.naspa.org\/engagement\/first-generation-college-celebration\/first-generation-college-celebration\">FirstGen Forward<\/a> (FGF) hosted the inaugural celebration in 2017, hundreds of higher education institutions, K-12 schools and various organizations have joined together to recognize the achievements of the first-gen community\u00a0on and around Nov. 8 each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the past six years, Marshall University has proudly participated in the national First-Generation College Celebration,\u201d said Bonnie Bailey, director of Student Support Services at Marshall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis annual event is crucial for raising awareness about the unique experiences and achievements of first-gen students. It allows us to highlight their resilience and success while connecting them with resources and support. The celebration fosters a sense of community and belonging, reminding students that they are not alone in their journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of Marshall\u2019s students identify as first-generation students. The university is committed to providing tailored resources and support to ensure their success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarshall University offers an ideal community size, where students can feel a strong sense of belonging,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cThe university\u2019s Student Support Services TRIO Program is dedicated to helping first-generation students. Many of the university\u2019s faculty and staff are also first-generation graduates. This provides valuable insight and understanding of the unique barriers and needs faced by first-gen students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marshall University is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment, ensuring that first-generation students can reach their full potential. The celebration of First-Generation College Student Week reflects the university\u2019s commitment to breaking down barriers and building pathways to success for all students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe First-Gen Committee at Marshall has expanded to include representatives from all across campus,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cThis diverse group works together to plan the annual First-Gen Day celebration, raising awareness, and provide valuable resources to support first-generation students across campus. The committee also created the university\u2019s new First-Gen website.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Launched in March, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/firstgen\">the First-Gen website<\/a>\u00a0was created to serve as a launch pad for both current and prospective first-generation students at Marshall. One of the components of this site is a directory of first-gen faculty and staff.
