{"id":27783,"date":"2025-02-24T14:27:50","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T19:27:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=27783"},"modified":"2025-03-24T08:54:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T12:54:55","slug":"marshall-university-maintains-carnegie-research-2-ranking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2025\/02\/marshall-university-maintains-carnegie-research-2-ranking\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall University maintains Carnegie Research 2 ranking"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall University has once again been named a \u201cResearch 2: High Spending and Doctorate Production\u201d institution, as designated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This R2 status highlights Marshall\u2019s position among the nation\u2019s leading research and teaching universities and signals a continuing commitment to the pursuit of research and innovation.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe research enterprise at Marshall continues to grow exponentially and I am incredibly proud of our faculty, staff and students,\u201d said Brad D. Smith, president of Marshall.\u00a0 \u201cWith the advent of the Marshall Innovation Corridor and other new initiatives, like the Institute for Cyber Security, we are ready to elevate our research efforts to new heights.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are 139 institutions ranked as R2, which means at least $5 million in research spending and 20 research doctorates.\u00a0 The designation is the second-highest classification an institution can receive. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cContinued recognition as a Carnegie R2 institution means Marshall University is progressing with its momentum as a highly regarded research entity,\u201d said Avinandan \u201cAvi\u201d Mukherjee, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. \u201cFrom basic science to clinical research, cyber security, forensic science and the humanities, among many other areas, Marshall researchers are looking to better our lives and communities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall received 291 research awards in 2024 totaling $73.3 million in new funding according to the Marshall University Research Corporation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur faculty and students are engaged in groundbreaking research that tackles some of the world\u2019s most pressing challenges,\u201d said John Maher, vice president of research.\u00a0 \u201cI am incredibly proud of the work they do, day-in and day-out, that creates a real impact for our world.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall first reached the R2 milestone in 2019.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Almost 4,000 American colleges and universities are categorized in the Carnegie classification system.
