{"id":27903,"date":"2025-03-27T12:57:55","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T16:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=27903"},"modified":"2025-03-27T12:57:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T16:57:55","slug":"marshall-university-sophomore-earns-spot-in-critical-language-scholarship-spark-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2025\/03\/marshall-university-sophomore-earns-spot-in-critical-language-scholarship-spark-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall University sophomore earns spot in Critical Language Scholarship Spark program"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif\"><strong>HUNTINGTON, W.Va.<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif\">Marshall University sophomore Eddie Sorah has been selected for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Spark virtual initiative, a nationally competitive language learning program.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"Signature\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif\">Sorah, an International Affairs and Japanese double major, will spend nine weeks this summer intensively studying Japanese through live instruction, cultural exchanges with language partners, hands-on activities, and virtual tours of historic and culturally significant sites in Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif\">Sorah hopes the program will strengthen his Japanese language skills and help him achieve his goal of becoming fully fluent. As a CLS Spark recipient, he will also receive automatic semifinalist status for next year\u2019s CLS in-person overseas study scholarship program, should he choose to apply. That program offers a fully funded, immersive language and cultural experience abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;font-size: 12pt;font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><span style=\"font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif\">He plans to pursue a career in translation or interpretation for government or intergovernmental organizations, where advanced language skills will be essential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif\"><span style=\";font-family: Tahoma, sans-serif\">Marshall\u2019s Office of National Scholarships assists students, alumni, staff and faculty in applying for competitive opportunities such as the Critical Language Scholarship and Fulbright awards.
