{"id":28477,"date":"2025-08-11T16:46:27","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T20:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=28477"},"modified":"2025-08-11T16:51:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T20:51:48","slug":"westbrook-appointed-as-murcs-new-export-control-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2025\/08\/westbrook-appointed-as-murcs-new-export-control-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"Westbrook appointed as MURC\u2019s new export control officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The Marshall University Research Corporation (MURC) has announced the appointment of James Westbrook as its new grant and export control officer, effective Aug. 1, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>In this role, Westbrook will oversee the university\u2019s compliance with federal export control regulations, ensuring that Marshall\u2019s research and international collaborations meet legal and ethical standards.<\/p>\n<p>Westbrook\u2019s background includes research administration and business assistance with development and government contracting. A U.S. Navy veteran, he will take on export control responsibilities in addition to his existing duties as a grants officer in MURC\u2019s pre-award division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to welcome James into this new role,\u201d said Dr. John Maher, Marshall University vice president for research and MURC executive director. \u201cJames\u2019 commitment to research integrity will be vital in ensuring our work remains secure and compliant as we broaden our global collaborations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As grant and export control officer, Westbrook will be responsible for developing and implementing policies and training programs related to export control laws. He will also serve as a key resource for faculty, staff and students engaged in international research and collaborations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honored to further contribute to MURC\u2019s mission of advancing research and innovation,\u201d Westbrook said. \u201cI look forward to working with the university community to support compliance and promote responsible global engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Westbrook will conduct an export control training session Sept. 19, where he will discuss protecting sensitive data, fostering secure collaborations and maintaining compliance in research.
