Students will participate in simulated workplace experiences, engage in authentic project-based learning connected to academic standards, and develop leadership, communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills while exploring meaningful, potential career pathways.

“Education has reached a moment where preparing students for tomorrow requires us to rethink how they experience school today,” said Dr. Kathy D’Antoni, Empowerment Collaborative project director and Marshall University Board of Governors member. “This partnership brings together one of West Virginia’s leading universities, an innovative public school system and the Empowerment Collaborative to create a model that can influence education throughout our state and beyond.”

Marshall University will serve as the research, innovation and higher education partner for the initiative, providing expertise in educator preparation, educational research, continuous improvement and statewide dissemination of best practices. By aligning our Empowerment work with Marshall’s Six Pillars of Excellence, we aim to create greater educational, economic and workforce opportunities for the students and families of Wayne County.”

The Empowerment model has already demonstrated encouraging results in participating schools, including stronger student engagement, improved attendance, reductions in discipline referrals and increased academic achievement. Through this partnership, Marshall University will help study, refine and expand these practices while preparing future educators to implement innovative teaching strategies.

The long-term vision extends beyond a single county. Together, the partners will work to establish a statewide network of Empowerment Schools, creating opportunities for districts across West Virginia to learn from proven practices while strengthening the state’s educational and workforce development efforts.

“This initiative reflects Marshall University’s longstanding commitment to serving the people of West Virginia through innovation, collaboration and educational excellence,” said Marshall University President Brad D.
