{"id":29796,"date":"2026-09-03T11:33:06","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T15:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=29796"},"modified":"2026-09-03T11:54:43","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T15:54:43","slug":"marshall-bold-scholars-awarded-bold-magic-grant-to-empower-future-stem-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2026\/09\/marshall-bold-scholars-awarded-bold-magic-grant-to-empower-future-stem-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall BOLD Scholars awarded BOLD Magic Grant to empower future STEM leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Four Marshall University students have been awarded a BOLD Women\u2019s Leadership Network Magic Grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehgbfoundation.org\/\">Helen Gurley Brown Foundation<\/a> to support the launch of a residential STEM summer camp to expand opportunities for high school students.<\/p>\n<p>Marshall University BOLD Scholars that were awarded the grant include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sydney Barbour, political science major, Barboursville, West Virginia<\/li>\n<li>Lacie Brenner, criminal justice major, Wellston, Ohio<\/li>\n<li>Emmalee Holt, civil engineering major from Louisa, Kentucky<\/li>\n<li>Aliyah Quinet, computer science major, South Charleston, West Virginia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The grant funding supports the summer camp, hosted at Marshall University, titled InnovateHER and is designed to introduce rural West Virginia high school students to real-world STEM careers through hands-on problem solving.<\/p>\n<p>As BOLD Scholars, Barbour, Brenner, Holt and Quinet applied for the Magic Grant as part of their curriculum through the BOLD Women\u2019s Leadership Network at Marshall. They designed the concept of the camp, planning curriculum and will work on recruiting volunteers to lead the high school students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we launched BOLD at Marshall in 2025, we dreamed the students would impact the next generation,\u201d said Alys Smith, First Lady of Marshall University and founder of BOLD at Marshall. \u201cIt has been incredible to watch our scholars develop and already work towards empowering the next generation of women\u2014a true full-circle experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pilot program will take place in Summer 2027 and serve 25 students over an intensive 3-day experience.\u00a0Students will be grouped with industry mentors and tackle practical challenges across engineering, medicine, cybersecurity and software.<\/p>\n<p>Applications for high school students to attend the camp will tentatively open in Spring 2027, with the camp running July 21 through July 24.<\/p>\n<p>InnovateHER aligns with Marshall University\u2019s commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers, while providing access to STEM education and leadership training for students in Appalachia,<\/p>\n<p>For more information InnovateHER and the BOLD Women\u2019s Leadership Network at Marshall University, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/bold\">www.marshall.edu\/bold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the BOLD Women\u2019s Leadership Network at Marshall University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The BOLD Women\u2019s Leadership Network at Marshall University is an innovative initiative designed to empower Scholars with the tools and confidence to lead with purpose.
