{"id":29880,"date":"2026-10-05T15:45:49","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T19:45:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=29880"},"modified":"2026-10-05T15:45:49","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T19:45:49","slug":"doj-forensic-genomics-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2026\/10\/doj-forensic-genomics-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall University Forensic Science Center receives $2.5 million to expand DNA testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/fsc\/\">The Marshall University Forensic Science Center (MUFSC)<\/a> has been awarded a $2.5 million grant from the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the Forensic Genomic Institute project.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ funding will support the MUFSC\u2019s capacity to generate SNP DNA profiles to support <a href=\"https:\/\/sofigg.org\/about-figg\/\">forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG)<\/a> testing in West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>FIGG uses the SNP DNA data and genealogy research to try to help identify unknown individuals in unsolved forensic cases.<\/p>\n<p>The grant was supported by U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Marshall University Forensic Science Center has established itself as a leader in our state and around the world,\u201d Capito said. \u201cI know the impact that their work has on our criminal justice system and in support of victims of crime and law enforcement. This allocation will help support the Forensic Genomic Institute project and will allow the center to better educate the databases they are supplying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marshall University President Brad D. Smith expressed his gratitude for Capito\u2019s advocacy in helping Marshall secure the funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarshall University is deeply grateful to Senator Capito for her steadfast support of our nationally recognized Forensic Science Program and her commitment to advancing innovation in higher education,\u201d Smith said. \u201cHer leadership has empowered Marshall to expand our capabilities in genetic technology, providing students with cutting-edge opportunities while strengthening the scientific and workforce needs of West Virginia and the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason Chute, executive director of the MUFSC, said this grant will build on the more than 25-year legacy of the center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis funding helps us further that mission by building out the Forensic Genomic Institute and putting the latest tools in forensic science, such as forensic genetic genealogy, to work. That means serving as a testing resource, a training resource, and educating the next generation of forensic scientists on this technology,\u201d Chute said. \u201cUltimately, behind every unsolved case is a family waiting, and this technology helps bring them closer to answers.
