{"id":29886,"date":"2026-10-06T14:11:50","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T18:11:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/?p=29886"},"modified":"2026-10-06T16:15:55","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T20:15:55","slug":"school-of-art-design-to-bring-steamroller-printmaking-project-to-pullman-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/news\/2026\/10\/school-of-art-design-to-bring-steamroller-printmaking-project-to-pullman-square\/","title":{"rendered":"School of Art &amp; Design to bring steamroller printmaking project to Pullman Square"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Marshall\u2019s School of Art &amp; Design invites the public to experience steamroller printmaking from 4-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, at Pullman Square in downtown Huntington.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District\u2019s monthly Art Walk event, students in Professor Sarah McDermott\u2019s Relief Printmaking class will be printing large-scale relief blocks based on the research of faculty members in other Marshall departments.<\/p>\n<p>To prepare for the event, students partnered with faculty in Marshall&#8217;s Biology and Sociology\/Anthropology departments, interviewing them and making a design inspired by their research, said McDermott, who is with the School of Art &amp; Design.<\/p>\n<p>Topics include solitary bees, inspired by Dr. Pam Puppo; coyote behavior, suggested by Dr. Shane Welch; fire ecology, recommended by Dr. Kyle Palmquist; basketry, cordage and textiles, inspired by Dr. Marion Coe; ritual violence in the Chim\u00fa and Inca empires in Peru, suggested by Dr. Rachel Witt; bird evolution in East Asia, an idea from Dr. Herman Mays; and hellbender conservation biology in West Virginia, and diamondback rattlesnake monitoring, inspired by Dr. Jayme Waldron.<\/p>\n<p>Print designs were hand-carved into 2-foot by 4-foot wood panels that will be printed onto paper and fabric using a pavement roller donated by West Virginia Paving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event will be a great opportunity to learn about large-scale printmaking,\u201d McDermott said. \u201cCome out and watch the giant mobile \u2018printing press\u2019 in action and support this interdisciplinary collaboration between artists and scientists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact Mark Zanter, director of the School of Art &amp; Design, at <a href=\"mailto:zanter@marshall.edu\">zanter@marshall.edu<\/a>.
