The summit will bring together students, educators and law enforcement professionals to promote safe online behaviors and help young people recognize and respond to risks they may encounter online.

Representatives from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) will lead presentations through the Know2Protect initiative, addressing topics such as unsafe online messages, grooming and sextortion. The program will help students recognize warning signs, understand how to seek help and identify trusted adults and resources available to support them.

“Online safety conversations are crucial as children spend more of their time on their devices,” said Kaylin Nichols, outreach and engagement coordinator for Marshall’s Institute for Cyber Security. “The Cyber Safety Summit gives students a safe, supportive environment to recognize warning signs of online abuse, ask questions and connect with professionals who can help. While we want to spread awareness of online risks, we also want students to know that they have people and resources available to them if something ever happens.”

Students will also meet a police officer and an electronic detection dog during a demonstration highlighting how specially trained dogs help investigators locate electronic devices at crime scenes. The presentation will give students a closer look at how law enforcement uses these dogs to support investigations.

The summit is designed to address serious topics in an approachable and engaging environment. Alongside learning practical online safety skills, students will have opportunities to become more comfortable asking questions and seeking assistance from law enforcement and other professionals.

A CONTACT Huntington resource table will be available for students who wish to ask questions, learn about support services or report concerns about online abuse or exploitation in a private space.

Through the Cyber Safety Summit, the Institute for Cyber Security aims to strengthen digital literacy and connect students and educators with resources that support safer online experiences.

Media are invited to cover the event. Please contact Kaylin Nichols to coordinate interviews the day of the event at 304-972-2170.

Marshall University’s Institute for Cyber Security will host the Cyber Safety Summit from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026, at the Joan C.
