{"id":149,"date":"2010-09-02T19:18:39","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T23:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/ori\/?page_id=149"},"modified":"2019-03-12T15:49:01","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T19:49:01","slug":"when-do-i-need-to-ask-for-a-review","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/ori\/office-of-research-integrity\/human-subject-research\/where-do-i-begin\/when-do-i-need-to-ask-for-a-review\/","title":{"rendered":"When do I need to ask for a review?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/ori\/human-subject-research\/where-do-i-begin\/\">Return to &#8220;Where Do I Begin?&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>All research involving the use of human subjects subject to the Marshall University Human Research Protection Program <strong>MUST<\/strong> be submitted to an Institutional Review Board (IRB) designated by Marshall University for review and approval <strong>PRIOR<\/strong> to initiation of the project.<\/p>\n<p>When there is any doubt as to whether or not a study could qualify as human subject research, you should submit an abstract to\u00a0the Office of Research\u00a0Integrity\u00a0for an IRB chairman or the director to review and make a determination.\u00a0This abstract must be written in lay terms, should be 1-2 pages max, and should include the following information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The purpose of the research;<\/li>\n<li>The scientific or scholarly rationale;<\/li>\n<li>The procedures to be performed;<\/li>\n<li>A description of what procedures were being performed already for diagnostic or treatment purposes (if applicable);<\/li>\n<li>The risks and potential benefits of the research; and<\/li>\n<li>Complete inclusion\/exclusion criteria (this can be submitted separately if extensive).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The abstract can be mailed, hand delivered or e-mailed to the Office of Research Integrity (ORI).\u00a0The ORI contact information is:<\/p>\n<p style=\"\"><strong>Office of Research Integrity<\/strong><br \/>\nWeisburg Applied Engineering Building &#8211; Rm 4211<br \/>\n304-696-4303<br \/>\nday50@marshall.edu<\/p>\n<p>Once a determination has been made, the ORI will contact you to communicate the decision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thesis\/Dissertation Abstracts <\/strong>may be submitted to <a href=\"mailto:day50@marshall.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bruce Day<\/a>,\u00a0Director of the\u00a0Office of Research Integrity, for a determination as to whether or not it is human subject research.
