An approved investigational device exemption (IDE) permits a device to be shipped to conduct clinical investigations of that device. [21 CFR 812]\n<p><strong>Identifiable:\u00a0 <\/strong>The identity of the individual is or may readily be ascertained by the investigator or associated with the information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IND:\u00a0\u00a0 Investigational New Drug Application &#8211; <\/strong>An FDA requirement for any drug or biological product used in a clinical investigation, unless exempt.\u00a0 IND is an investigational new drug application and is synonymous with \u201cNotice of Claimed Investigational Exemption for a New Drug,\u201d given so the drug can be legally shipped.\u00a0 An investigational drug must have an IND before it can be shipped.<br \/>\n*May also be required of an existing drug being evaluated for a new indication, dose or route of administration.[21 CFR 312]\n<p><strong>Informed Consent:<\/strong> Prospective subjects must be given sufficient information about the research and its risks and benefits to reach an informed decision as to whether they will voluntarily participate.\u00a0 Investigators must obtain the informed consent of prospective subjects before they can be included in research, unless waived by the IRB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IRB Approval:\u00a0<\/strong> The determination of the IRB that the research has been reviewed and may be conducted at an institution within the constraints set forth by institutional and federal requirements.\u00a0 An IRB shall have the authority to suspend research that is not being conducted in accordance with the IRB&#8217;s requirements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IRB:\u00a0 Institutional Review Board <\/strong>&#8211; A committee established by law that oversees all research involving human subjects at an institution.\u00a0 The IRB is legally viewed as the protector of integrity and ethical standards of all research and has the authority to enforce these standards.\u00a0 The main functions of IRB review are to assure that the regulations are met and the rights and welfare of participants is protected.<\/p>\n<p>The IRB has the authority to<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>approve, disprove or modify<\/li>\n<li>conduct continuing review<\/li>\n<li>observe\/verify changes<\/li>\n<li>suspend or terminate approval<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The institution or institutional officials cannot approve research that has not been approved by the IRB.\u00a0 In the VA system, the IRB is the Human Subjects Subcommittee of the Research &amp; Development Committee.
