Double Major in Physics and another Science or Engineering

Many students at Marshall University pursue simultaneously two undergraduate degrees or dual major in related fields.
For students who complete a double major with physics, the department will waive the required physics electives.

An especially good example is a Double Major in Mathematics and Physics (physics is applied math).  Students double majoring in Mathematics and Physics might replace PHY 445 (Math Methods I) with MTH 427 (Advanced Calculus I) or MTH 415 (Partial Differential Equations) if they have a C or higher in the class.

Another excellent path is a Dual Degree in Engineering and Physics (engineering is applied physics).  Students double majoring in Physics and Engineering do not need to take PHY 202,  might replace PHY 308 (Thermal Physics) with ENGR 219 (Engineering Thermodynamics) and PHY 425 (Solid-State Physics) with EE 350 (Electric Properties of Materials) if they have a C or higher in the class.

If you are interested in a Physics Major with a second degree program, we work to facilitate students in this path, including support and custom course scheduling, to help you finish in 4 academic years.

Academic Requirements

A candidate for a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics will have to fulfill the specific major requirements for both Physics and the second major, as well as the general education requirements of the College of Science. A 2.00 overall GPA and a 2.00 Major GPA is required to graduate.
