These internships are available to all students regardless of major. The legislator will guide the intern through the process. Herndon Fellowship\u00a0| Spring Semester | 12 Credits | Paid<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><strong>Deadline: November\u00a01<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Undergraduate students are selected to participate for the entire spring semester in Charleston and will earn up to twelve hours of credit in their major. Herndon Fellows work the entire 60-day legislative session and are assigned a sole legislator from either the Senate or the House of Delegates. After the legislative session is over, students are then assigned to a government agency for the remainder of the semester.<\/p>\n<p>The interns are required to perform research and various staff functions. Among other job-related responsibilities, participants are introduced to and develop an understanding of the politics of legislation, legislative research, bill drafting, the role and function of committees and the executive legislative liaison.<\/p>\n<p>The experience pays $1,300 per month ($5,200 total) for a semester-long internship and students receive 12 upper division credit in their major, where applicable, or in Political Science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students must be full-time undergraduates from any public or private institution of higher learning in West Virginia.<\/li>\n<li>Students must have completed 60 undergraduate hours in any major, achieved a grade point average sufficient for admission into their degree program, and completed courses in Political Science or have extensive public affairs experience.<\/li>\n<li>Students must submit three letters of recommendation, academic transcripts, and a written essay on a specified topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To Apply:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Print and complete the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvlegislature.gov\/Educational\/Internship\/Herndon.pdf\"><strong>Judith A. Herndon Fellowship\u00a0application<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Along with required documents outlined in the application, submit to Mitzi Meade, Administrative Assistant, in Smith Hall 738 by <strong>November 1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Note: The deadline for applying for this program is\u00a0<b>November 1.<\/b>\u00a0Please note that applications must be RECEIVED, not postmarked, by that date.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Graduate\u00a0Internship Opportunity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Rollins and Burk Fellowships | Spring Semester | 6 Credits | Paid<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><strong>Deadline: November\u00a01<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Graduate students spend an entire semester in Charleston and earn up to six hours of credit in their major.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia graduate students are chosen to assist lawmakers serving in leadership positions of the Senate and the House of Delegates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Walter Rollins Scholars<\/span> participate in the lawmaking process by researching relevant issues, assisting in preparation for floor deliberations and monitoring legislative activity under the direction of those in the highest positions of legislative leadership.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Robert W. Burk, Jr., Student Interns<\/span> assist standing committee chairpersons and other leading senators and delegates.
