{"id":192,"date":"2016-08-11T16:06:41","date_gmt":"2016-08-11T21:06:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/public-health\/?page_id=192"},"modified":"2016-08-11T16:43:17","modified_gmt":"2016-08-11T21:43:17","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/public-health\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"entry-title mu-green bold\">Research\u00a0is\u00a0an integral part of our mission as we seek\u00a0knowledge to improve health. \u00a0Both the undergraduate and graduate programs in public health are\u00a0particularly focused\u00a0on studies which produce results that can be translated to practice.\u00a0 Such work can help answer basic science questions, as well as address some of\u00a0the most critical problems in our health\u00a0care system.\u00a0 That engages us with basic scientists, clinicians, and policymakers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Undergraduate Research<\/h2>\n<p>Today, public health includes\u00a0areas as wide-ranging as epidemiology, chronic disease, mental health, disaster response, refugee health, injury prevention and tobacco control.<\/p>\n<p>Recent research projects here at Marshall University\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identifying ways to control childhood and adult obesity in our region<\/li>\n<li>Developing\u00a0breast cancer research tactics within our medical communities<\/li>\n<li>Traveling to underserved populations to administer free health screenings<\/li>\n<li>Studying\u00a0secondhand tobacco smoke levels and exposure<\/li>\n<li>Promoting\u00a0technologies that make clean and safe drinking water<\/li>\n<li>Advocating for\u00a0policies that protect the global environment and sustainable practices<\/li>\n<li>Establishing global connections in Tanzania, India and many other countries in regard to preventative health outcomes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 class=\"entry-content\">Faculty\u00a0Research<\/h2>\n<p class=\"entry-content\">Our faculty are comprised of doctorally-trained health professionals with a wide range of research interests.\u00a0 Their expertise in\u00a0research and practice\u00a0is not only an asset in teaching, but\u00a0also in\u00a0mentoring\u00a0of student\u00a0practicum and research experience. \u00a0One-on-one sessions with faculty provides a key time for students to begin to\u00a0identify possible matches with faculty research interests.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Graduate Research<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/mph\/files\/Gullickson-Reception-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-734\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/mph\/files\/Gullickson-Reception-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Gullickson - Reception 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Students have the option to pursue\u00a0a thesis option, in contrast with a practicum essay.\u00a0 We note that the number of MPH students pursuing\u00a0a thesis option\u00a0has been increasing, in part as\u00a0research can\u00a0strengthen one\u2019s academic credentials.\u00a0\u00a0Such work is typically undertaken after two semesters, either during the summer, or commencing at the beginning of Second Year.\u00a0 Research imposes substantial commitments\u00a0including\u00a0design and planning, data collection and analysis, and thesis preparation \u2013 thus\u00a0student thesis proposals\u00a0should be filed\u00a0<em>early<\/em>\u00a0in\u00a0the term prior to one\u2019s projected graduation. \u00a0Filing deadlines \u2013 particularly for the final thesis \u2013 make\u00a0careful planning very important.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Facilities<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/mph\/files\/Lab-Right.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-679\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/mph\/files\/Lab-Right-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Lab -
