How to Apply for a Federal Direct (Parent) PLUS Loan

1.  The student must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

2.  A parent must complete a Direct PLUS Loan Request by signing into studentloans.gov web site with their FSA ID, clicking on “Apply For A Direct PLUS Loan,” clicking “Start” next to “Direct PLUS Loan Application for Parents.”

3.  Parent must complete a Federal Direct PLUS Electronic Master Promissory Note (PLUS MPN) by visiting studentloans.gov, clicking on “Complete Loan Agreement,” then clicking “Start” and selecting “PLUS MPN For Parents.”

The Federal Direct PLUS Electronic Master Promissory Note (PLUS MPN) signed by the parent is valid for 10 years once a PLUS loan is taken out (unless the parent applied and was approved with an endorser). However, an application for a Federal Direct PLUS Loan must be made each academic year and each summer award period to be considered.
