{"id":1237,"date":"2018-10-27T12:08:42","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T17:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sojmc-interns\/?page_id=1237"},"modified":"2022-08-16T21:43:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T02:43:51","slug":"rules-and-guidelines-for-sojmc-interns","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sojmc-interns\/welcome\/employers\/rules-and-guidelines-for-sojmc-interns\/","title":{"rendered":"Rules and Guidelines for SOJMC Internships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Requirements for SOJMC internships:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Undergraduate SOJMC majors are <strong>required<\/strong> to complete 3 credit hours of internship before graduation.<\/li>\n<li>It takes <strong>100 hours of work to equal 1<\/strong> hour of academic credit.<\/li>\n<li>Students may take 1, 2 or 3 credits of internship in a semester.<\/li>\n<li>To receive academic credit, internship work <strong>must occur during the semester of enrollment.<\/strong> Work between semesters can be counted provided the student is enrolled for the following semester.<\/li>\n<li>Internship credit is offered for a limited number of students in fall and spring semesters. The SOJMC prefers that students <strong>earn internship credit during the summer semester<\/strong> between their junior and senior years when students are most prepared to make a contribution to a company\/organization and receive true on-the-job experience.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Students may take up to 3 additional credit hours of internship to fulfill a SOJMC elective requirement.<\/li>\n<li>Students enrolled in the internship course must\n<ol>\n<li>report regularly to the course professor,<\/li>\n<li>complete a final reflective report, and<\/li>\n<li>provide a portfolio of mass communications internship work. (Length of report and number of portfolio pieces depends on the number of credit hours taken.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Students and employers are expected to make arrangements for a <strong>midterm visit<\/strong> with the internship course professor. The meeting will include all three parties and will last about 15-30 minutes. No preparation is necessary for the visit. The course professor will review the intern\u2019s performance. The meeting may be done face-to-face, virtual, or over the phone.<\/li>\n<li>Employers must submit a <strong>final evaluation<\/strong> form worth 50% of the intern\u2019s grade.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Please read the government guidelines on internships at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/whd\/regs\/compliance\/whdfs71.htm\">https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/whd\/regs\/compliance\/whdfs71.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The School of Journalism and Mass Communications encourages all internship employers to consider <strong>PAYING<\/strong>\u00a0students earning academic credit for an internship at least a <strong>STIPEND<\/strong> covering the cost of course enrollment.
