(Used with permission)<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">It was a glorious day of firsts for Marshall&#8217;s oft-battered football team \r\n\t\tSaturday as it played the role of opportunist in a 17-7 victory over old \r\n\t\tnemesis Morehead.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">It was the first game on Fairfield Stadium&#8217;s new synthetic AstroTurf . . \r\n\t\t. and, the first opening game victory since 1966, which was also the \r\n\t\tlast time the Thunder Herd defeated the Eagles.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">It was the first full house (11,000 estimate) for an opener in many \r\n\t\tyears, and the throng included the governor of West Virginia, Arch A. \r\n\t\tMoore, Jr. The governor delivered a short &#8220;pep talk&#8221; to the thundering \r\n\t\tHerd prior to the game. In return the Marshall players, after the \r\n\t\tvictory, voted to send the game ball to the governor&#8217;s mansion in \r\n\t\tCharleston.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The chief executive now has a 1-2 football record on visits here.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Ted Shoebridge, Marshall&#8217;s fine junior quarterback, scored both \r\n\t\ttouchdowns, and sophomore Marcelo Lajterman, a soccer-style place kicker \r\n\t\twho followed Shoebridge from Lyndhurst, N. J., slammed home a 29-yard \r\n\t\tfield goal.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">But, it was Marshall&#8217;s opportunistic defense that cloaked itself in \r\n\t\tglory. The alert MU defenders picked off three Morehead passes, \r\n\t\trecovered two fumbles, and stopped the Eagles once inside the Herd 10 \r\n\t\tyard line.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The game wasn&#8217;t a minute old before Marshall and Shoebridge had rung up \r\n\t\tthe first touchdown.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Dennis Blevins kicked off for Marshall and Mo Hollingsworth fumbled the \r\n\t\tball to Capt. David Griffith at the Eagles 12 yard line. Hollingsworth, \r\n\t\ta speedster and a usually sure-handed wide receiver, could not get a \r\n\t\tfirm grip on the squirming pigskin which was booted short to near the 10 \r\n\t\tyard line.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Griffith first tried to scoop up the bouncing ball, then finally fell on \r\n\t\tit.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">On the first play from scrimmage Shoebridge rolled to his left and \r\n\t\tskirted the Eagles&#8217; flank for the six points. Lajterman drilled the \r\n\t\tpoint after and the Herd was off and winging.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The run for the score set the Marshall offensive trend for the day. \r\n\t\tShoebridge, who virtually rewrote the Marshall passing record book as a \r\n\t\tsophomore, suffered through his worst varsity game.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The Jersey Jet connected on but six of 15 passes for 105 yards and was \r\n\t\tintercepted twice. However, the Shoe wasn&#8217;t totally at fault.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Shoebridge wasn&#8217;t getting the best protection from the offensive line, \r\n\t\tone completion was called back on a holding penalty, and flanker Jack \r\n\t\tRepasy couldn&#8217;t hang on to what appeared to be a touchdown &#8220;bomb&#8221; in \r\n\t\tthe fourth quarter. The ball was on Repasy&#8217;s finger tips, but he was \r\n\t\ttrying t make the catch while looking straight into the sun.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Hood and Harris sparked a ground attack that netted 151 yards. Hood, the \r\n\t\tday&#8217;s individual leading gainer, averaged just over four yards a try by \r\n\t\tpicking up 75 yards on 18 carries. Harris carried 15 times for 71 yards \r\n\t\tand caught two passes for 31 yards.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Harris almost threw for a touchdown in the second quarter. From the \r\n\t\tthird and 10 at the Morehead 14 he faked a run to the right, then threw \r\n\t\tto Repasy in the end zone corner. Jack jumped to make the catch but came \r\n\t\tdown with both feet out of bounds.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">On the next play Lajterman attempted a 32-yard field goal but was wide \r\n\t\tto the left.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">His 29-yarder came in the first quarter after sophomore Felix Jordan \r\n\t\tturned in his first of two interceptions off Morehead staring quarter \r\n\t\tback Buck Donley.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The Marshall front four put a hard rush on Donley and the hurried pass \r\n\t\twas thrown high. Jordan picked it off at the Eagles&#8217; 43 and returned 16 \r\n\t\tyards to the 27.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Hood got 16 on a quick pitch to the left, but Shoebridge lost 12 on the \r\n\t\tnext play when he momentarily bobbled the center snap and ran backward, \r\n\t\tjuggling the ball. A Shoe-to-Repasy pass regained 11 yards, but a throw \r\n\t\tto Blevins for the score went incomplete. That set up a fourth-and-11 \r\n\t\tsituation and Lajterman responded with the field goal.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Morehead took the ensuing kickoff and made its strongest scoring bid of \r\n\t\tthe first half. The Eagles marched 39 yards in 12 plays and had a \r\n\t\tfourth-and-third situation at the MU seven. But Dennis Crowley, in the \r\n\t\tbig play, was met by Griffith and Larry (The Governor) Brown and dropped \r\n\t\tfor a two-yard loss.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The brightest spot in the MU offense were the thrusts of the sophomore \r\n\t\trunning backs Joe Hood and Art Harris.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Marshall got its final score off the opening drive of the second half. \r\n\t\tArt Harris returned Tom Byrant&#8217;s boot 22 yards to the MU 45. Shoebridge \r\n\t\tthen engineered the Herd 55 yards in six plays and threw a crucial \r\n\t\t42-yard pass to Hood to put the ball on the Eagles&#8217; 12. It came on a \r\n\t\tthird-and-9 situation from the Marshall 45.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Art Harris carried to the eight. Shoebridge missed on a pass, then \r\n\t\tTeddie skirted right end for six points. Lajterman split the goal posts \r\n\t\tfor the point after.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Marshall, however, flittered away some other scoring chances. Jordan&#8217;s \r\n\t\tsecond interception gave the Herd the ball in the Morehead nine as he \r\n\t\tpicked off a Donley pass at the eagle 42 and raced it back 33 yards.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Art Harris carried to the seven. Hood was stopped for no gain, then lost \r\n\t\tfive. And, Shoe on a fourth-and-goal from the seven fumbled a center snap \r\n\t\tand lost three more.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Morehead ran one play and Crowley fumbled to Marshall&#8217;s Bob VanHorn, a \r\n\t\tdefensive tackle [&#8230;.] Morehead&#8217;s secondary, however, teamed up to stop this Herd \r\n\t\tthreat. Ron Gathright got a hand on a pass intended for Repasy and \r\n\t\ttipped it to teammate Larry Baldridge.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Morehead&#8217;s lone score came on a Dave Schaetzke to Gary Shirk \r\n\t\tfourth-quarter pass that covered 49 yards. Twice MU defenders, the last \r\n\t\tBobby Hill at the five, had shots at Shirk but he shook them off.
