(Used with permission)<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Close football games are usually decided on which team can best take \r\n\t\tadvantage of the breaks which it is presented.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">That was the case at wet Fairfield Stadium Saturday afternoon when \r\n\t\tunbeaten Miami ground out a hard\u2013earned 19-12 victory over Marshall \r\n\t\tUniversity.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The Redskins were presented with three golden opportunities and managed \r\n\t\tto take advantage of all three for touchdowns.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The third one, especially, was a real heartbreaker.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The battling Thundering Herd, down 13-0 at the end of three quarters, \r\n\t\thad cut the Redskins&#8217; lead to 13-6 only to have Dick Adams return a punt \r\n\t\t47-yards for the touchdown which proved to be the margin of victory.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Adams scoring jaunt down the right sideline came on a second chance \r\n\t\tpresented to him when Marshall was called for illegal procedure on the \r\n\t\tprevious play.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>Swarmed by Herd<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">On that play, MU punter Marcello Lajterman punted to Adams on the Miami \r\n\t\t43 where he was swarmed under by Herd defenders.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">However, given another chance by the penalty, Miami and Adams took \r\n\t\tadvantage. The Redskin defensive half-back broke down the right side and \r\n\t\tall but ran over Lajterman, the last man between him and the goal, at \r\n\t\tthe 30.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Miami&#8217;s two other scores were set up by Marshall offensive mistakes.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The Redskins, who entered the game as the nation&#8217;s number one defensive \r\n\t\tteam, took a 7-0 lead in the second period when linebacker Marc Smith \r\n\t\tcovered an Art Harris fumble on the Marshall 11-yard line.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Miami scored from there on two carries by fullback Time Fortney, the \r\n\t\tsecond covering two-yards. Archie Strimel&#8217;s only successful conversion \r\n\t\tof the day made it 7-0 with 12:01 left in the half. That was the way \r\n\t\tthings stood at intermission.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>Another Big Break<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">In the third quarter Miami got another big break when a Ted Shoebridge \r\n\t\tpass skipped through Bob Patterson&#8217;s hands and Adams picked it off at \r\n\t\tthe MU 35 and returned it to the seven. <\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Joe Booker got three up the middle and Fortney skirted left end with \r\n\t\t1:24 left in the period to make it 13-0.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Other than that, it was a day in which the Marshall defense covered \r\n\t\titself with glory, holding the Redskins to only 251 yards on 88 plays &#8211; \r\n\t\tan average of 2.8 yards per attempt. Miami entered the game with an \r\n\t\toffensive average of 430 per game.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">&#8220;Our defense did a helluva job,&#8221; said Tolley. &#8220;It made a lot of big \r\n\t\tplays.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">&#8220;If we&#8217;d had any offense at all, I think we could have won the game,&#8221; he \r\n\t\tadded. &#8220;Of course, we had a couple of big plays \u2013 Ted&#8217;s (Shoebridge) \r\n\t\tcall and (Joe) Hood&#8217;s great catch.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The two big plays Tolley was referring to were Marshall&#8217;s two touchdown \r\n\t\tplays.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Marshall got its first score with 01:43 remaining in the game when \r\n\t\tShoebridge hit Hood from 22-yards out \u2013 the Jersey Jet&#8217;s first scoring \r\n\t\theave of the season and one which enabled him to set a school career mark \r\n\t\tof 14.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Hood made the catch in the left front of the end zone with defenders \r\n\t\tTom VanHeusen and Tim Raybuck hanging all over him.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The defense presented the Herd with field position when Art Shannon \r\n\t\tcovered Fortney&#8217;s fumble on the Miami 21. The touchdown pass came on the third play of the series.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The fumble recovery was one of five for the Herd defense. Willie Bluford recovered two. John \r\n\t\tYoung one and Bon VanHorn one.<\/p>\r\n \t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Shannon, who was in on 15 tackles, also picked off Jim Bengala&#8217;s pass as did Larry Sanders.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>Brilliant Call<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Marshall&#8217;s second touchdown came on a brilliant run and brilliant call by Shoebridge who \r\n\t\tset a school career record for total offense as he had 82 yards passing \r\n\t\tand 35 rushing to run his total to 2,330. The old mark was 2,222 held by \r\n\t\tHowie Miller.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">On a second-and-10 situation at the Redskin 29, Miami changed defenses and Shoebridge \r\n\t\talertly checked off. He called for a quarterback sneak and he simply \r\n\t\tbolted right up the middle for the touchdown which made it 19-12 with \r\n\t\t4:23 left in the game.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The run climaxed a 53-yard drive which required only five plays.
