(Used with permission)<\/p>\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">When a football team can&#8217;t catch the ball, it&#8217;s difficult to catch an \r\n\t\topponent like Louisville.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">That&#8217;s the fate that befell Marshall (2-3) and its fine quarterback, Ted \r\n\t\tShoebridge, Saturday at Fairfield Stadium as the University of \r\n\t\tLouisville (3-3) got away with a 16-14 victory.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">And, on the one play when the ball was deliberately thrown poorly, it \r\n\t\twas the official who muffed the successful attempt at deception. <\/p>\r\n\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">On top of everything, the last play of the afternoon proves it&#8217;s a game \r\n\t\tof inches as Marcelo Lajterman attempted a 57-yard field goal that could \r\n\t\thave given the Thundering Herd a one-point victory. But the sidewinder \r\n\t\tfrom Lyndhurst, N.J., was about a foot short as the ball passed under \r\n\t\tthe bar.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Shoebridge connected on 11 of 28 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown, \r\n\t\ta seven-yarder to Joe Hood, a tailback turned flanker. But the Jersey \r\n\t\tJet could have hit on at least 18, and Coach Rick Tolley saw at least 10 \r\n\t\tpasses that should have been caught.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>Just Can&#8217;t Catch<\/h2>\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">&#8220;We just can&#8217;t catch the football,&#8221; he said after the game. <\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">On the first play of the last series of down, however, Shoe was supposed \r\n\t\tto throw poorly. All season the Herd has worked on a play where \r\n\t\tShoebridge throws a bouncing backward (lateral) pass to Bob Harris, \r\n\t\tthe backup quarterback who plays split end.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The ball is not supposed to be whistled dead because it&#8217;s a lateral. \r\n\t\tHarris can then throw a forward pass and on this play his primary \r\n\t\treceiver was to have been Joe Hood. But Saturday the officials blew the \r\n\t\twhistle, and later, according to Tolley, admitted they&#8217;d made a mistake. \r\n\t\tThe reason for bouncing the ball to Harris is simple. When the ball hits \r\n\t\tthe ground, the defense relaxes for a moment.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">&#8220;We find,&#8221; said Tolley, &#8220;that the ball also bounces perfectly on the \r\n\t\tAstroTurf.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Louisville took a 6-0 lead at halftime on two field goals, one in each \r\n\t\tquarter, by Scott Marcue, who also does the Cards punting barefoot. His \r\n\t\tfirst was a 25-yarder. Marcus also kicked Louisville to a 9-7 lead in \r\n\t\tthe fourth quarter with a 19-yard field goal.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Louisville&#8217;s lone touchdown capped a 55-yard, forth-quarter march and \r\n\t\tTom Jesukaitis scored it on a one-yard dive on a counter play. \r\n\t\tLouisville got the football at their own 45 when linebacker Paul \r\n\t\tMattingly intercepted a Shoebridge pass intended for Hood.<\/p>\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>Gilmore Scores First<\/h2>\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Kevin Gilmore scored the first MU touchdown from one-yard out on a slant \r\n\t\tover right tackle after the Herd got the football on the Cardinals&#8217; 25 on \r\n\t\ta Louisville mix-up. Marcus, back to punt on fourth-and-four, surprised \r\n\t\teveryone in the ballpark, including Coach Lee Corso, by throwing a pass. <\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Corso said later the Cards do use such a play, occasionally, and the \r\n\t\tpunter takes his key from the way wide receiver Tony Burdock lines up. \r\n\t\tBut this time Burdock &#8220;keyed&#8221; the play accidentally.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>Shoe to Hood<\/h2>\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Marshall took advantage of it, and the key plays included Shoebridge \r\n\t\tscrambling for nine, and a 10-yard pass to Bob Harris whose good second \r\n\t\teffort carried to the Card five. Shoe got a first down at the two, and \r\n\t\tArt Harris had two tries before Gilmore slipped in for the score.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The Herd marched 56 yards for its second touchdown right after \r\n\t\tJesukaitis&#8217; clinching TD, and Marshall got a break on a 17-yard \r\n\t\tdefensive pass interference call good for a first down on the Cards&#8217; 10. \r\n\t\tThree plays later Shoe hit Hood for the six-pointer.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Louisville, directed by sophomore quarterback John Madeya, gave the Herd \r\n\t\ta lesson in offense. Madeya passed for 246 yards, hitting 17 of 33 \r\n\t\tthrows. He was intercepted once. His favorite target was tight end \r\n\t\tCookie Brinkman who set a Louisville single game record with 10 \r\n\t\treceptions and 197 yards.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">The Cards amassed 447 yards total offense, but the Herd got tough inside \r\n\t\tits 10 yard line. The first time Louisville moved in close, the Green \r\n\t\tdefense made the visitors go for the field goal, which Marcus drilled.<\/p>\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>Wide Attempt<\/h2>\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">In the second quarter Louisville got to the MU 21 and a Marcus 38-yard \r\n\t\tattempt was wide. But with two seconds to play in the half, the Cards \r\n\t\twere at the MU nine when Marcus made it 6-0.<\/p>\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Before the third field goal by Marcus, Louisville drove 78 yards \u2013 from \r\n\t\ttheir 20 to the MU two. The Cards didn&#8217;t only move through the air. They \r\n\t\tlaunched a trio of hard running backs, paced by Jesukaitis, the \r\n\t\ttailback, who picked up 96 in 32 rushes, and fullback Bill Gatti, who \r\n\t\tgained 94 yards on 17 carries.<\/p>\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Marshall lost a great scoring chance near the end of the first quarter \r\n\t\twhen Gilmore fumbled at the Louisville four. MU started from its 38 \r\n\t\tfollowing Marcus&#8217; first field goal. Shoebridge cranked up on first down \r\n\t\tand hit Hood on a 59-yard pass that looked like a TD. Officials, \r\n\t\thowever, ruled Joe was bumped out of bounds at the Louisville three. <\/p>\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<h2>&#8216;Slow Whistle&#8217;<\/h2>\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">On first-and-goal Gilmore fumbled to Gary Inman, the Card defensive \r\n\t\thalfback who doubles as the No. 2 quarterback. Marshall coaches, \r\n\t\thowever, claim Gilmore didn&#8217;t lose the ball until he hit the turf, and \r\n\t\tsaid Tolley: &#8220;The runner&#8217;s down when he hits the ground. The field can&#8217;t \r\n\t\tforce a fumble. We think it was a slow whistle.&#8221; <\/p>\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t<p class=\"newsprint\">Lajterman missed two other field goal tries.
