The 5th annual Student Research & Creativity Symposium begins on Wednesday, April 1st at 2:15pm at the Brad D. Smith Center for Business & Innovation. The keynote presentation by Dr. Miguel Minguez Lopez kicks off the event in the Encova Auditorium. Student poster and oral presentations follow on April 2nd stating at 8:30am and running through most of the day. Students, faculty, Marshall family, and the community are all invited to attend. Those not able to make it to the venue can follow the presentations available via livestream.<\/p>\n

The body of the abstract should be no longer than 250 words in length. You also need to have all the appropriate approval numbers (IRB\/IACUC etc.) for submission. Scholarly activities (undergraduate research and creative endeavors)\u00a0must\u00a0be among those programs that members of the West Virginia State Legislature understand if it is to continue to enjoy support.<\/p>\n For many disciplines, scholarly activities are an essential component of the university educational experience. Nothing more effectively demonstrates the value of these activities than the words and stories of the student participants themselves.\u00a0Thursday,\u00a0February 19, 2026, from 9-11:30 a.m.,<\/strong>\u00a0the<\/strong>\u00a0Twenty first Annual Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol<\/strong>\u00a0(URDC)<\/strong>\u00a0will take place in the West Virginia State Capitol Rotunda (http:\/\/www.wvculture.org\/agency\/capitol.html).\u00a0 This event\u00a0features posters on research\/creative endeavors from student attendees of colleges and universities around the state and will help members of the WV State\u00a0Legislature and Executive Branch understand the importance of undergraduate scholarly activities by providing members with an opportunity to speak directly with the students whom these programs impact.\u00a0\u00a0Directly after the poster session, students and their faculty mentors are invited to lunch at the nearby Culture Center (1900 Kanawha Boulevard East, Charleston, WV 25305; see website CALL FOR ABSTRACTS<\/strong><\/p>\n This is a unique opportunity that we believe will have a positive impact on the future of State funding for undergraduate education. We encourage undergraduates from both public and private institutions to submit abstracts. We anticipate selecting 80-100 students for participation in the presentation session.<\/p>\n The Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol Steering Committee is calling for students to submit abstracts of their research\/creative endeavors that represent any of the following disciplines\/fields, though presenters are not limited by the disciplines below:<\/p>\n GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR YOUR ABSTRACT<\/strong> For those students who intend to use a presentation previously presented at a disciplinary meeting, the abstract submitted for this event may be different.<\/p>\n Some capability exists for including graphics in the abstract. In this case, submit a standard text abstract on the application form and, in a separate email to\u00a0URDC@wvstateu.edu<\/a>,send your abstract with the graphics properly located on the page. The Office of Student Research is dedicated to fostering a culture of inquiry, discovery, and creativity across the entire university. Our mission is to highlight and support the many research and creative endeavors that make Marshall a vibrant academic community.<\/p>\n In support of this mission, we inaugurated the Research Portal<\/a>, a web-based tool designed to connect students with faculty mentors who share their research and creative interests. By registering through the Research Portal, students and faculty can explore opportunities tailored to their academic pursuits by using discipline-specific keywords.<\/p>\n The Office also coordinates two signature annual events. Each spring, we host the Student Research and Creativity Symposium<\/strong>, a campus-wide celebration where students from all disciplines present their scholarly and creative work to peers, faculty, staff, and the broader Marshall community (https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/student-research\/student-research-and-creativity-symposium\/<\/a>). Note that the 2026 Symposium will be held on April 1-2 2026. In addition, we coordinate the \u00a0Marshall University\u2019s participation in the Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol (URDC)<\/strong> in Charleston, where undergraduates present their projects to state legislators and policy leaders, showcasing the value of student research to the state of West Virginia.<\/p>\n Through these efforts, we seek not only to promote student and faculty scholarship but also to enhance the visibility of Marshall University as a center of innovation and intellectual engagement. \nExplain the research or creative work that was performed in plain language.\u00a0The abstract title is limited to 14 words and the abstract itself to 250 words (150-250 words).<\/strong>\u00a0The abstract title should be grammatically correct, accurate and convey maximum information. In addition, use title words that can be comprehended by the general public. Within the abstract, discuss the importance of the research or creative work to the discipline and to society (i.e., What larger problem were you trying to solve or understand?). Please keep in mind that your abstract is intended for individuals who will not be experts in your field. It is not a professional meeting abstract.\u00a0Students should work with their faculty research mentors in fashioning abstracts (i.e., obtain mentor feedback and approval before submission).<\/strong><\/p>\n
\nThe deadline for submission is Friday, November 21, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. No late submissions will be accepted. Students selected for participation will be notified in early January 2026.<\/p>\n\n
