The idea for this project came about as a joint effort between Chuck Somerville, Dean of the College of Science, and the environmental and safety office. Rick Abel, assistant professor of NRRM, assigned the growing and care of the plants to Angela Kargul, senior in NRRM.\n<p>All of the plants for this garden were grown from seeds donated by a non-profit organization called Monarch Watch. This Monarch Waystation Seed Kit comes with a mix of 8 different plants to support every stage of the butterfly\u2019s life. These plants were grown in the Greenhouse.<\/p>\n<p>This garden is located at the North West corner of Buskirk dorm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/greentrail\/\">Return to Green Trail<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"columns w-full lg:w-5\/12  lg:px-6    mt-6\">\n<div class=\"\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/Monarch-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment noopener wp-att-512\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-512\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/Monarch-1-970x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Monarch-1\" width=\"400\" height=\"422\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"marsha-row mt-4 mb-4 flex flex-wrap -mx-2 lg:-mx-6  justify-start border-0 border-gray-100 first:mt-0\">\n\t\n<div class=\"columns w-full lg:w-6\/12  lg:px-6    mt-6\">\n<div class=\"\">\n\nWe are excited to announce that the Monarch Waystation on campus has been host to numerous Monarch caterpillars, and we have had the privilege of photographing a Monarch shortly after emerging from a Chrysalis. This butterfly will travel thousands of miles to spend the winter in the forests of central Mexico before returning to North America next Spring for breeding season.\n<p>The flight of the Monarch&#8217;s is the longest known distance insect migration on Earth: 3,000 miles! This migration is one of the world&#8217;s greatest natural wonders. However, it is threatened by habitat loss in both North America and overwintering sites. The Marshall University Monarch Waystation is a small step towards much needed conservation efforts across the United States.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"columns w-full lg:w-6\/12  lg:px-6    mt-6\">\n<div class=\"\">\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/Monarch-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-511\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-511 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/Monarch-2-1024x438.jpg\" alt=\"Monarch-2\" width=\"940\" height=\"402\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/4220263.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-342\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/4220263.jpg\" alt=\"4220263\" width=\"269\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a>Monarch Butterfly populations are declining due to loss of habitat, forest degradation, and the widespread use of pesticides. They rely mostly on Milkweed plants for survival, as it\u00a0is the only plant upon which they lay eggs and their larvae feed. Millions migrate\u00a0to California and Mexico every year. However, due to natural disasters and urban development their food sources are not as available as they once were.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/ButterflyGarden-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-409 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/ButterflyGarden-1-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"Butterfly Garden\" width=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/ButterflyGarden-1-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/sustainability\/files\/ButterflyGarden-1.jpg 813w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Honeybees, hummingbirds, and many other pollinators can also benefit from the butterfly garden. This is a wonderful all around addition to campus life and a little ecosystem all by itself. Urban access to these flowers can have a strong impact on the tiny creatures around us. Even lizards and frogs can be found. This is a great spot to sit down and enjoy the smaller things in life.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the flowers you can find are the Purple Coneflower, Scarlet Sage, Tithonia Torch, Zinnia and Dahlia\u2019s. All of these are great food sources for the butterfly. As you take a walk around see what flowers you can identify.
