{"id":81,"date":"2011-04-07T13:18:06","date_gmt":"2011-04-07T13:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/uc\/?page_id=81"},"modified":"2023-09-05T14:33:09","modified_gmt":"2023-09-05T18:33:09","slug":"make-this-a-habit","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/uc\/tutoring-services\/make-this-a-habit\/","title":{"rendered":"Make This A Habit"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"w-full xl:container mx-auto px-6\">Learn this four-step technique for reading course materials.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably different from what you\u2019re used to doing, and there\u2019s a good chance you\u2019ll find it works much better.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First browse<\/strong> the entire section you\u2019ve been assigned.\u00a0 Let your eyes go where they want to:\u00a0 check out the headings, bold-faced items, diagrams and figures, whatever paragraphs catch your attention.\u00a0 Just get a sense of how the section is put together and what the main ideas are.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Next, look for summary materials<\/strong> the book might include.\u00a0 There may be a chapter summary at the end.\u00a0 There may be a preview, or a bullet list of important ideas, or a glossary of key terms.\u00a0 Whatever forms the summary materials may be in, read them slowly and carefully.\u00a0 Don\u2019t expect to completely understand all the ideas, but let them start to sink into your long-term memory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Then read through<\/strong> the assignment in sequence.\u00a0 Highlight passages, make margin notes in the book, write things down in your notebook.\u00a0 Take your time with this reading, and let the familiarity you gained by browsing guide your highlighting and note taking.\u00a0 By all means, make marks in your book!\u00a0 You own it, and marking it up as you study will help you tremendously in learning the material.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finally, jot down ideas<\/strong> you don\u2019t feel rock solid about understanding, after doing the reading.\u00a0 Ask about these things \u2013 in class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This four-step process won\u2019t require much more time, but I think you\u2019ll find you have a far better grasp of the material as a result.\u00a0 Try it and see.\u00a0 Oh, and keep your dictionary handy.\u00a0 How else can you figure out what the sentence actually means, eh?<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Dr. Stephen D.
