Student receives SMART Scholarship

Alex Canfield, a Marshall University sophomore, has received a National Defense Education Program SMART Scholarship. As part of the program, he will participate in a summer internship at a Department of Defense facility and receive civilian job placement after graduation with the Department of Defense.

Foundation creates John H. Houvouras Scholarship

Publisher and Marshall University alumnus Jack Houvouras has established an undergraduate scholarship at the university. The John H. Houvouras Scholarship for Journalism was designed to assist aspiring journalists from West Virginia.

Marshall and YMCA partner to offer annual bike camp for children with special needs

Marshall University’s College of Health Professions is hosting the Lose the Training Wheels Camp June 11-15 and, for the third year, the university has partnered with the Phil Cline Family YMCA to host the summer sessions. In its eighth consecutive year and offered in concert with the non-profit charity iCanShine, the program teaches participants with disabilities how to independently ride a two-wheel bicycle. Riders from Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia and Maryland are encouraged to apply if they do not have access to similar services in their cities.

Taylor named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs

Marshall University President Jerome A. Gilbert today announced that Dr. Jaime (pronounced “Hi-meh”) R. Taylor, dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Austin Peay State University, has been named Marshall’s next provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.
