{"id":510,"date":"2016-07-27T13:52:42","date_gmt":"2016-07-27T13:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/shep\/?page_id=510"},"modified":"2016-07-27T18:36:04","modified_gmt":"2016-07-27T18:36:04","slug":"sbirt-focus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wellness\/sbirt\/sbirt-focus\/","title":{"rendered":"What is SBIRT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wellness\/files\/sbirt-banner.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wellness\/files\/sbirt-banner-300x88.jpg\" alt=\"sbirt-banner\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach, focused on the delivery of early intervention and treatment services.<\/p>\n<p>An intervention based on \u201cmotivational interviewing\u201d strategies<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>S<\/b><b>creening: <\/b>Universal screening \u00a0quickly assesses use and severity of alcohol; illicit drugs; and prescription drug use, misuse, and abuse<\/li>\n<li><b>B<\/b><b>rief <\/b><b>I<\/b><b>ntervention: <\/b>Brief motivational and awareness-raising intervention given to risky or problematic substance users<\/li>\n<li><b>R<\/b><b>eferral to <\/b><b>T<\/b><b>reatment: <\/b>Referrals to specialty care for patients with substance use disorders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Treatment may consist of brief treatment or specialty AOD (alcohol and other drugs) treatment.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wellness\/files\/goal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wellness\/files\/goal-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"goal\" width=\"218\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"\"><strong>The primary goal of SBIRT is to identify and effectively intervene with those who are at moderate or high risk for\u00a0psycho-social\u00a0or health care problems\u00a0related to their substance use.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SBIRT<\/strong> saves lives and money and is consistent with overall support for patient wellness.<\/li>\n<li>Since 2003, SAMHSA has supported SBIRT programs, with more than 1.5 million persons screened.<\/li>\n<li>Outcome data confirm a 40% reduction in harmful use of alcohol by those drinking at risky levels and a 55%\u00a0reduction in negative social consequences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Current Approach Towards Addiction Isn&#8217;t Working<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Historically, treatment hasn&#8217;t been\u00a0initiated until an individual is in crisis and unfortunately stigmatizing beliefs often perpetuate the idea that the individual is experiencing a moral failing or just lacks will power.<\/p>\n<p>SBIRT proposes a public health approach that doesn\u2019t wait until someone is in medical or legal crisis, rather seeks to identify at-risk users early.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intervene with a broad population with more diversely trained professionals.<\/li>\n<li>Addiction should be treated like other chronic illnesses.<\/li>\n<li>Substance abuse and addiction is an epidemic effecting communities all over the world, United States, and especially in our local community.<\/li>\n<li>Drug use is on the rise, yet most people report <strong>not being asked<\/strong>\u00a0about their substance use.\u00a0However, report being very willing to answer honestly about it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Early intervention is key <\/b>to addressing the addiction epidemic and reducing stigma!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wellness\/sbirt\/mu-curriculum\/\">Click here to find out more about Marshall&#8217;s unique and collaborative program.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach, focused on the delivery of early intervention and treatment services.
