{"id":2515,"date":"2024-05-31T11:12:35","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T15:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/?p=2515"},"modified":"2024-05-31T11:14:32","modified_gmt":"2024-05-31T15:14:32","slug":"students-protest-preacher-through-chanting-art-and-twerking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/2024\/05\/31\/students-protest-preacher-through-chanting-art-and-twerking\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Protest Preacher Through Chanting, Art and Twerking"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><\/h5>\n<h5>Luke Hamilton<\/h5>\n<h5>Friday, March 15, 2024<\/h5>\n<p>A controversial preacher brought together students from the LGBTQ community, religious backgrounds and across campus as they protested his message on Thursday, March 14, near Buskirk Field.<\/p>\n<p>Springtime in Huntington, West Virginia, already brings more students outside, but a protest of this magnitude has not happened since an anti-abortion group came to campus in April of last year.<\/p>\n<p>The man preaching from the top of a flower bed went by the name Brother Ray. His wife joined him, watching from a distance while holding her baby and debating with students.<\/p>\n<p>Ray and his wife declined to give their last name. The preacher\u2019s wife did provide her first name, but never confirmed the spelling. This caused more confusion when she referred to herself as Sister Ray.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2517\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2517\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/rays-wife-preacher-protest-768x432-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2517\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/rays-wife-preacher-protest-768x432-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Sister Ray debates with a student while holding her baby.\" width=\"568\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/rays-wife-preacher-protest-768x432-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/rays-wife-preacher-protest-768x432-1.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2517\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sister Ray debates with a student while holding her baby.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe read Leviticus 18:22, which is like, the most standard anti-LGBTQ+ verse in the Bible and yelled about transsexuals going to hell and whores going to hell,\u201d said Sam Green, a student at the protest.<\/p>\n<p>Green is a member of the Marshall University Appalachian Liberation Collective, a student organization which advocates for the liberation of marginalized communities.<\/p>\n<p>After grabbing the attention of spectators early on, he said the preacher calmed down while remaining antagonistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a friend message me that he was talking about LGBTQ+ people reading off hateful Bible verses and not reading them correctly,\u201d Green said.<\/p>\n<p>Other students found out about the preacher from popular social media platforms such as YikYak and Snapchat.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ray said he felt like God sent him to Marshall two days before spring break because a student could die and miss out on everlasting life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are hostile to the truth. It\u2019s a generation that\u2019s been deceived,\u201d Ray said. \u201cThey\u2019ve been deceived to think that good is evil and evil is good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he expected the backlash, and he continued to spread his message among the protesters for hours.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters and campus organizations created signs and chalk drawings to display resistance to Ray. The majority of the artwork included pro-LGBTQ messages and emphasized their opposition to Ray\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>One of the artists, a student named Jewel Robinson, said the majority of her friends are part of the LGBTQ community. The rhetoric used by Ray motivated Robinson to draw a message with chalk that said, \u201cAll you need is love.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2521\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/chalk-art.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2521\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/chalk-art-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"559\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/chalk-art-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/chalk-art-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/chalk-art.jpg 1125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The chalk art drawn by Jewel Robinson during the protest.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fine, but not when you\u2019re spreading hate speech about my friends,\u201d she said about Ray\u2019s presence on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s bringing the community together but for the wrong reasons,\u201d said Sophia Smart, another student at the protest.<\/p>\n<p>Smart said Ray would probably go home if the protesters stopped giving him attention.<\/p>\n<p>Students involved in the religious community on campus also disagreed with Ray\u2019s message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t use this as your example for Christianity,\u201d said James Sneddon, a student who practices evangelism on campus. \u201cGod\u2019s kindness leads us to repentance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said Ray forgot to show that kindness is necessary to cause spiritual change.<\/p>\n<p>Although many of the protesters stressed the importance of love, Sneddon also said, \u201cThis is not love. It\u2019s one side yelling at another side. They\u2019re screaming obscene things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aside from art, others protested by audibly mocking Ray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crowd told this guy that his wife was gonna leave him for a high schooler,\u201d Sneddon said.<\/p>\n<p>Smart said Ray\u2019s abstinence was the reason for his anger towards the protesters.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to verbal and artistic protests, some protestors drew upside down crosses on their faces, and one student twerked on the flower bed to distract the preacher.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Protester twerking to distract preacher\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8yAxjYntK_4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m always open to trying different ways,\u201d Ray\u2019s wife said after multiple students had questioned her husband\u2019s methods.<\/p>\n<p>Students said Ray was polite in comparison to her husband, but she continued to defend his message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s trying to provoke people to thought of what happens after you die,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Other students said Ray\u2019s message caused more problems than it solved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s frankly ridiculous, and I don\u2019t think that it has any place at a college campus, especially how diverse Marshall is,\u201d said Aliyah Quinet, another student.<\/p>\n<p>Quinet summarized the preacher\u2019s message by saying, \u201cOh, you\u2019re going to hell just because you like to kiss men or women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenisis Carter, another student, said there are loving Christians out there, but Ray\u2019s word choice was an example of why people turn away from religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, he\u2019s not doing anything,\u201d Carter said. \u201cIt\u2019s embarrassing for him and his religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Green said Ray could have better results if he were more approachable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, instead of a guy just screaming, he could have a kinder, more gentle conversation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Marshall University- Preacher Protest\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kooQfp-E_1w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Luke Hamilton Friday, March 15, 2024 A controversial preacher brought together students from the LGBTQ community, religious backgrounds and across campus as they protested his message on Thursday, March 14, near Buskirk Field.
