{"id":3291,"date":"2025-01-12T20:23:48","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T01:23:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/?p=3291"},"modified":"2026-03-25T10:24:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:24:17","slug":"marshall-mens-basketball-heats-up-before-road-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/2025\/01\/12\/marshall-mens-basketball-heats-up-before-road-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshall Men\u2019s Basketball Heats Up Before Road Trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marshall Recap<br \/>\nBy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/ben-anderson\/\">Ben Anderson<\/a>, FM88 Sports<br \/>\nJan. 12, 2025<br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall men\u2019s basketball closed out its four game homestand on Saturday, with an 81-69 victory over the Georgia Southern Eagles.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall led for more than 37 minutes of the contest, taking the lead at the 17:02 mark in the 1st half with Graduate Student Mikal Dawson connecting on a trifecta to give Marshall an 8-6 lead.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dawson made five 3-pointers for the sixth time this season, as Marshall shot 10 for 26 from behind the arc.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI feel like it can get really easy,\u201d Dawson said postgame. \u201cAs soon as I see like one or two go in, I start to feel pretty good. I feel like my teammates also trust me, to get the ball to me, and just find me whenever I\u2019m open. They trust me to knock the shot down.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Graduate Student, Jalen Speer, scored the first points for Marshall on his eighth consecutive make from downtown, and Dawson drilled two of his own in a 9-0 run.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEarly on in the season we struggled with that,\u201d Dawson said. \u201cJust being able to shoot the ball, and we talk to each other and give each other confidence to be able to shoot the ball. We knew eventually our shots were going to fall and now that they (shots) are starting to fall I think we\u2019re going to be a very dangerous team.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOne of our emphases (was) to get out, run in transition, kick the ball ahead,\u201d Marshall head coach Corny Jackson said in the postgame press conference. \u201cWe\u2019ve been spending time on that in practice the last few weeks. These guys execute, and (when) you hit a couple of threes in a row, it can be a huge game changer.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Speer converted his third shot from downtown and his 10th straight without a miss to give Marshall an 18-16 lead with 8:06 remaining in the second half.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Georgia Southern entered the contest averaging 28 3-point attempts per game and shot 5-of-16. Eugene Brown made the Eagles\u2019 first triple with 5:48 remaining in the first half trailing 36-23.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey\u2019re a fast-paced team that likes to get out in transition,\u201d Dawson said. \u201cWe focused on that it our one-day prep. I think we executed that, big time.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe really focused on it,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cOur three main focuses were take away the three ball, offensive rebounding, and transition points. I thought we executed the gameplan well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall held Georgia Southern to eight offensive rebounds, and four transition points.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall had 3 double-digit scorers with Dawson leading the team with 21 points.\u00a0 Junior Dezayne Mingo scored 17 while going 6 of 9 from the field. Senior Nate Martin earned his second double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt felt pretty good,\u201d Nate Martin said during the postgame conference. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall was without Graduate Student Forward Obinna Anochili-Killen, who suffered an ankle injury in Thursday\u2019s win against James Madison. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI knew with Obinna out, all of us were going to have to step up. He\u2019s a huge piece for us. I think we all definitely stepped up in a big way, and dominated from start to finish,\u201d Martin said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAnother great team win, especially without Obinna,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cHe\u2019s a major part of our program. Our other guys stepped up. The beauty of these guys is they didn\u2019t flinch.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall outscored the Eagles in both halves, 45-35 in the first, 36-34 in the second.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Georgia Southern went on a 7-0 run late in the second to get within 11, but Mingo\u2019s slam dunk would end the run. Marshall never trailed in the second half.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Eagles were led by Nakavieo White\u2019s 22 points.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall improved to 10-8 (3-2 SBC) and now sits in a six-way tie for second place in the Sun Belt Conference behind South Alabama, and Old Dominion.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marshall starts a four-game road stretch on Thursday, taking on the James Madison Dukes in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Marshall is 0-6 on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI feel like we can execute our game plans,\u201d Dawson said. \u201cOur coaches will have us ready for the road games, so it will be about transitioning the wins to away games.
